Aloha!  We are Benjamin and Charlene Villaro from Hawaii.  I'm Charlene and I'll be sharing our story with you.  Ben and I have been best friends since our days at Aliamanu Intermediate and Radford High,  we fell in love when we were 22 and as of December 15, 2015, we've been married for 14 years.  We have 2 children, an 11-year-old and a 5-year-old.  Ben works for a non-profit organization called Mental Health Kokua which helps people in recovery transition back into the mainstream community, and I am a proud Hawaii public school teacher.
We are humbly asking for help with our soaring medical bills. This past summer, Ben went in for routine surgery for an abcess on his appendix and then all was well.  A few months passed, and he had trouble holding down his food and he lost 60 pounds in a matter of a few short weeks.  His doctor ordered a ct scan and from radiology he was immediately admitted to the hospital where he was hospitalized for the removal of a bowel obstruction which turned out to be Stage 4 cancer of the appendix.  He was at Pali Momi Hospital between October 6 and October 18.  Under the care of Dr. James Kakuda, the cancer was removed and as of this very moment, our oncologist is monitoring him closely and radiation or chemotherapy are not needed at this time.  In all honesty, during those 2 weeks in the hospital, we couldn't tell what was more frightening--his rough recovery or the cancer diagnosis--there were a couple of times where I thought I'd lose him right there in the hospital.  When I was able to bring him home, we knew nothing could be worse than his hospitalization--not even cancer, which we are facing head on, fearless and with tons of faith and love from our family and friends.
Your donations would mean so much to us.  The money will be used to pay down some of our debt to Hawaii Pacific Health, labs and radiology clinics, and surgeon fees...we would appreciate any help as it is a struggle to contend with these costs and support our family at the same time--it is quite a juggling act.  Your help would also mean so much to me personally because my husband, Benjamin Villaro Jr., is a quiet man who is humble and kind and so generous with his time and his help--he's been on his own since he was 15, and never once has he ever asked for help or complained or turned bitter--as a matter of fact, he always offers help to others and encourages and champions others.   This step to establish a gofundme account was a gigantic step for him because he never, ever asks for anything.  Even now, with his diagnosis, he is strong, only saying, "Well, you're dealt the cards you're dealt and you just have to do your best with what you've got."
We would be so thankful for any help--we will honor your donations by paying it forward to others in need.  God Bless You and Thank You for your time.  Aloha- The Villaro Family
