Help Marshall Walk Again

Donation protected

Who are Ted, Robin, and Lily without their Marshall? Zack and I adopted this sweet little guy from ACS in San Antonio last summer after he had been passed around multiple homes, never finding a forever family, until we adopted this energetic, lovable boy and made him part of the gang.

Late Friday night, Marshall began to lose feeling in his back legs. Eventually, he was just falling back on them. We had no idea how it happened (and heard a menagerie of possibilities ranging from genetics to injury), so we took him from vet to vet at 1am until we found one that was able to give him a proper exam with imagery.

They told us he most likely needed surgery, and after paying a few hundred from multiple vets’ exams, we agreed to it. The initial estimate was $5,000 to $7,000. I’m active duty enlisted military, and Zack works as a supervisor at a theme park. We don’t make the most money in the world, but luckily we were able to combine (and max out) a few credit cards in order to pay the initial deposit of $5,000.

He had his surgery Saturday morning and will be in their care for the next few days, and hopefully he will be able to walk again in the next few months. It was a 50/50 shot, even with the surgery, but it’s worth it to give him a fighting chance at regaining his mobility. He’s a tough little fella, so we’ll see how it goes. When we get him in a few days, we will get the final bill. The vet today said we’re looking at the high end (possibly $7,000-8,000).

His spirits were high today when we called to check on him. He’s alive, and that’s what’s most important right now. He may be in a wheelchair for life, but even if so, the surgery will have helped prevent back pain for life. But, he also may recover and walk again. We will only know in time. We’re hopeful for the latter.

I set this GoFundMe up to ask for anything you feel you can contribute, even if it’s just positive thoughts. I’m not asking for the full high end of $8,000, just hoping to offset some of the credit cards I maxed out today so I can be ready for any potential upcoming expenses (including a wheelchair and medications, etc.) and to also be able to cover whatever remains when we get him soon. I‘ve already signed up to start a second job driving with Lyft, but I’m not sure how much I’ll make as I’m full time active duty Navy and also a graduate student at St. Mary’s University.

Even if we raise $0, this little rescue pup is worth every penny I will have paid—from his clearance adoption price of $15 to the potential $8,000 from this weekend. Thank you, friends and family, for taking the time to read this. I appreciate every single one of you.
