My name is Tanya Rana and Kathy O'Rourke is a dear friend of mine. Kathy is truly one of the best people I know. She is a dedicated elementary school teacher and her students truly love her. Much of her life has been dedicated to teaching and helping students grow. She is also a face in the comic convention community. She attends many conventions in California and creates amazing and unique art pieces.
Kathy has had an incorrectly diagnosed condition in her leg for many years. Recently she was diagnosed with AVM. AVM stands for arteriovenous malformation and is a very rare condition. Only 1.5% of the population is diagnosed with AVM. AVM is usually located in the brain or spine, but unfortunately, Kathy has a large growth on the inside of her thigh. The growth has gotten so large and painful that she is in pain sitting and in pain standing. At this point, her only form of pain relief is laying in bed with her leg elevated. She has had to see numerous doctors and specialists. Due to the size of the growth and how long it took to get diagnosed, Kathy will likely be having surgeries for the rest of her life. Her first surgery is scheduled for the end of the month.
At this point, Kathy is in so much pain that she is having a hard time going to work. Her doctor has recommended she stay home from work until she has surgery. As a teacher, Kathy doesn't have enough sick days to stay home. On top of working through the pain, she needs different medical tools like compression stockings for after the surgery. She has also been traveling quite far for her doctors appointments. All of these expenses has caused extra stress for Kathy while she's dealing with this condition.
