Help us save dogs rescued from cruelty and neglect

Donation protected
Phoenix was a severely emaciated dog who was taken from a home where he was suffering from neglect and in need of critical care. He was found outside shivering in freezing cold conditions, unable to eat food due to a blockage in his stomach and extremely dehydrated. He was approximately 5yrs old with 0% body fat and was 36lbs; for his breed and age he should have been between 60 and 65lbs.

I am the police officer who found him and persuaded animal control to release him in to my care on the proviso that I pay for his surgery myself. Our local animal shelters simply don't have the funds to even attempt to save dogs such as Phoenix, and as a result they are placed on a euthanizing list when they could go on to live a happy and healthy life if they could only get the veterinary care they needed.

Phoenix was released from the vets with an 85% chance of survival and spent the next 3 days eating tiny portions of food, wagging his tail, giving kisses, and showing us insights of what appeared to be a gentle and goofy personality. On Valentine's Day, Phoenix suffered from unforeseen complications that his body was too weak to overcome and much to our devastation he passed away. He was warm, with a full belly, and with people who cared deeply about him and never left his side. We are unbelievably sad that he didn't make it, but do not regret our decision to try and help him at all.

We have been unbelievably touched and uplifted by the number of people who wanted to help us and would like to thank you all for supporting our cause like you have. This experience has shown us that you can make a difference and has ignited in us a desire to help other dogs in similar situations. As a result we have decided to set up a fund that will help pay for veterinary procedures for canines rescued by law enforcement officers from situations of cruelty / neglect. We hope that by providing an extra pot of money for animals rescued from cruelty cases, we can prevent animals that would normally be placed on the 'un-saveable' list from being put down when there's a chance they could go on to live happy and healthy lives if they could only get a little extra help. We will also be accepting donations of lightly used jackets for dogs to donate to rescues who need help to keep warm, fundraising by selling doggie related merchandise such as bandannas and bow ties at local events, and arranging volunteer opportunities to take our rescued dogs on hikes around the local area etc.

We desperately want something good to come from this situation and would greatly appreciate your help in ensuring that other dogs can receive the care they need when they need it. We realize we can't save them all, but we can make a difference to some, and for those we can help it can literally mean the difference between life and death. Thank you for your help in advance. We couldn't have done any of this so far without the kindness and generosity of people like yourselves who really want to help make a difference. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has helped us and hope we can help make the world a kinder place for animals who need us humans to help fight their corner for them.
