On October 4th, 2016,  a  sweet 18-year-old gelding was being trailered by his owners to go do cattle work. Chance loved to work cattle. While at a dead stop in traffic, A young man, covered in sleeve tattoos slammed into Chance's trailer at an estimated speed of 60 miles an hour. Chance was not expected to make it through the night,  but he did.  X-rays show that Chance's  jaw is completely broken.  The break is enormous.   He was unable to be taken to UC DAVIS because he was not expected to live through the night. Chance is fighting hard to live and was even trying to eat grain this morning, albeit while under the influence of pain medications .  The terrible person who crashed into Chance's  trailer jumped out of the truck he was in and somehow fled the scene in another vehicle. Police have been searching for him.   Chance needs to go to UC Davis for comprehensive workup  to see if there are internal injuries, if the broken jaw can be fixed, and  to determine if there are more fractures in his skull. Chance is a real fighter and his owners have limited funds and will do whatever they can. The vet who has been taking care of him has been a doll and has donated most of her time but as she said he must go to UC Davis now.

We are very touched by the recent very generous donations to Chance. Chance is doing well generally speaking. He recently went to DAVIS and unfortunately his jaw is not healing as well as they had hoped. He has a screw that seems to be backing out of the bone and the bone itself is just healing very slowly. He will be reassessed in one more month to see if he can have the wire taken out. In the meantime he is eating grain and can walk around the pasture with a grain bag on his head. His mood seems very good. I know he wishes you all a Merry Christmas. This is not to solicit donations I just wanted to give everyone an update.

I just spoke to Karen about Chance. The update is that Chance needs more time to heal . Apparently the jawbone is not healing as well as they hoped. The wire will stay in at least another month. He has a screw backing out of the jawbone. Vets are watching that. Overall, it appears this will be a long process. We just need to pray the screw does not come out. I will post some photos soon before closing this account. Thank you to all. Merry Christmas.

This is so awful. My worst nightmare as someone who does a lot of horse hauling. I hope Chance makes it - he looks like a tough old guy! We need a tree and some rope for the guy who hit him.

I'm so relieved to hear Chance made it through his surgery and got the plate he needed. Now we want you to heal up completely Chance, and go back to enjoying life and sharing love with your owner and friends. I am a horse owner, too, so my heart is full of concern for you. I want all the best for you and your peeps. P.S. Cathy Trope, you find the tree, I'll donate the rope.

I'm so so happy that Chance made it through the surgery. He is a serious fighter and I'm very happy to have helped in the small way I did. I hope he is given something to help with the pain and that he fully recovers. I sure hope whoever hit his trailer comes forward or at least has a big dose of consciousness over the harm he caused!

I hope he will be ok, but I have to say this, please do not judge just because the guy had sleeve tattoos, that has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!! Come on..... MY son has sleeve tattoos, and he would never intently hurt any animal or person.. SMH!!
