Nina's SACNAS Travel Fund

My name is Nina Nez. I'm currently a senior at the University of Arizona, studying Animal Science with an Emphasis in Equine. I was recently invited to give a oral presentation about my summer research at the SACNAS National Confernce on Oct. 13-15 in Long Beach, California.

Last summer 2015, I was an intern with the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance (NARA) at the University of Washington. I had the great opportunity to work in a Biofuels and Biochemical Laboratory. There I investigated the characteristics of hybrid poplar trees and optimized the process to increase the overall sugar yield of the feedstock to maximize the final biofuels and biochemicals production. I had such an amazing research experience last summer that I reapplied to the NARA program again this summer. This summer 2016, I worked in a Chemical Engineering Laboratory to investigate the inhibitory effects that condensed and hydrolysable tannins have on the saccharification process in biofuel production. I did not have any research experience or skills prior to the internships and I've come to realize that I want to be a part of more research projects in the future.

I have never attended a conference before, and I feel like attending the SACNAS National conference will open my eyes to new opportunities. I submitted an abstract for my 2015 summer research, for the opportunity to present my work in a public environment. To my surprised I was selected to present my research, I'm excited and nervous about this, but I'm ready for the challenge! I applied to the travel scholarship that SACNAS offers but unfortunately I didn't receive the funding. However, I was able to secure funding for my registration with the help of the Native American Student Affairs Center on campus. Now, my travel expenses consist of lodging, airfare, transportation from airport to hotel and meals (costs are listed below). I would really appreciate any assistance with travel funding to the conference. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Travel Expenses

Lodging - $800 for 3 nights (Oct. 12-15, 2016)
Airfare - $363 (Tucson -> Long Beach, CA)
Airport shuttles - $100
Meals not provided at conference - $120 (~ $30 per day)

Total $1383.00

Thank you very much,

Nina Nez
