Please help rebuild my town, Canoa

$10,646 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 90 people in 35 months
A week has passed since my community suffered a devastating loss of life, property, and income to a 7.8 earthquake. My son and I were fortunate to be away...others were less so. Located at the epicenter, Canoa was mostly destroyed. It took a few tense days to locate loved ones, cry for those lost, and shake the numbness that follows grief but now I am ready to return and help. I will go alone to join those who bravely stayed behind and bring what I can in terms of relief. So much is needed...and it will take time, patience and your support. The money I collect will be brought directly to Canoa and used for those who no longer have. Myself, I am very lucky, I have my family alive, my house still stands, and my community to go back to. Please consider helping. You may not know this place or these people, but you know me, and I thank you for Canoa.

Hola Canoa Champions,

A solid year has passed since your donations have started helping the Alegrate Canoa program that is dedicated to the children of the Canoa area to help in their recovery from the trauma of the 7.8 earthquakes with art, sports, dance and much more!

In that time they have done so much and accomplished many of their goals. However, we were only half of the funding and the other participant has pulled out a few months ago. The head of the program has requested the entire amount left over to be given in one lump sum instead of the monthly allotments I had been doing.

She has given me a very convincing explanation for such a request that in short is due to their ability to reach more children and still provide for the two years we had budgeted for the program. Rocio is the head of Alegrate Canoa and also a personal friend. She is both honest and responsible and I vouch for her completely.

The area has suffered more setbacks as after shocks continue to scare the population even over a year later. The most recent was a 6.2 a few weeks back; their struggle is not over and they continue the good work in my absence.

I keep up with the program through their facebook page (Alegrate Canoa) and you can too. I also receive a receipt for every month's donations. So I am asking you, the donors if anyone has any objections or concerns with me giving the full balance to the program at once. Please let me know asap as I will be taking action in the next two weeks.

Of course, you are more than welcome to donate more to this worthy program and as much as I hate to ask for money, this disaster was the only time I have and the response was overwhealming. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart and from the Canoa folks!

Lastly, I did request two things to make this happen:
1-That yourselves, the Canoa Champions would be recognized for their contributions for the longevity of the program.
2- That if for some reason the program ended before the two years was up that the money would stay in the Canoa community given to another worthy cause that we would have some say in determining.

That is all.
Gracias Amigos!

Rebirth. That is the theme of today and it has been the theme of Canoa, Ecuador for the past year since last years devastating earthquake. My family and I have had a very successful move to Ireland but our thoughts are never far from Ecuador and our friends still there making the best of a very difficult situation. This is not a plea for money, although there are always the need for more support, but rather a huge acknowledgment and thank you for all the love and help you generously provided in our time of need last year. You are not forgotten and your money CONTINUES to support the after-school kids/adults programs that have put a smile on the faces of so many people who needed that most. Monthly deposits are made from the money you gave to continue the fantastic programs started last August. If you have an interest please take the time to check out the link below to the Alegrate Canoa Facebook page that tells a loving story of dedicated individuals helping to make the lives better of those who suffered most. Check out the rebirth of a town through music, sport, art and community love. Thanks to you all many of those most traumatized are finding new hope. Of course these funds will run out and if you are so inclined to continue your support the link below will but you in contact with the right avenues for that. You are the Canoa Champions! We thank you, Gracias!

Hi friends,
It has been about 3 months since leaving Ecuador. I occasionally share posts from Canoa on my facebook account but since not everyone is on that social medium I wanted to report the progress here as well.
Its been a busy time personally with relocating and adjusting but I am happy to report that things are getting better for the kids and community in Canoa. The earth continues to move there but the people you have entrusted your money to are keeping things steady for the kids via the program we developed.
I have attached the latest program that shows what is offered and by whom. I encourage you to take a closer look at their facebook page and if you choose to continue to support the program do so directly to Alegrate Canoa via Rocio (see fb for details).
If you have any questions I am happy to answer those to the best of my ability as I am in regular contact with the head of the program and your donations provide a monthly income that helps the program survive.
Thank you.
