Programs for Disadvantaged Youth
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Raz Chan, I'm an author, coach, and martial arts teacher. I have been involved for a few years with helping a local elementary school raise donations for their breakfast program which helps feed kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. Most the kids from this school come from low income families. Since I've gotten involved they have seen a dramatic improvement in the grades of this kids. However, it is a constant battle to make a big long term impact as the need continues to grow each year.
The school has approached me in February to help them raise $20,0000 for after school programs which they currently cannot afford. The funds raised will help with the following...
1. A robotics program - $10,000
2. Afterschool sports, arts, mentorship, camps for the kids - $10,000
The teacher had explained to me that many of the kids who skipped classes never missed a robotics class. As well, many of these kids have never experienced being outside of the city. Being able to experience camping would open up their minds to an entirely new life experience.
I am looking to raise as much funds as I can by December 31st of next year 2017.
You can find out more about the school's needs and my involvement with the program in this article with the Vancouver Sun newspaper .
This cause means a lot to me because I was once one of those kids who grew up in a home where my parents struggled with finances. Funding for sports, after school programs and mentors helped me stay out of trouble. It also prepared me for life as an adult. I have been blessed to have a good life, and want to leave a legacy behind where programs such as this one will serve this elementary school for future generations.
