Diabetic Alert Dog for Mattie

Letter from Mattie: "I'm a 15-year-old diabetic and I'm looking for a D.A.D (diabetic alert dog). I participate in a lot of sports so I’m looking to get one to keep up with my highs and my lows. When I’m playing sports my blood sugar could just bottom out and I could pass out on the court. A lot of the time after playing basketball games it drops really low and I worry about going to sleep, because I don’t want It to drop in the middle of the night. Sometimes when I’m working out my blood sugar will just randomly drop. A diabetic alert dog can tell if my blood sugar is dropping, even 30 minutes before it actually drops. It can save me from having serious lows or serious highs. After you have lots of highs or lows it will affect how your body is in the future. The dog will warn you when you blood sugar is dropping or if it’s really high. It will wake you up in the middle of the night if it has to.

That part is very important to me because I wake up in the middle of the night with low blood sugar. Eventually my body will start to get uses to the way I feel when its low and I won’t wake up anymore. And if it drops too low I could become unconscious. There are so many reasons this dog will be an amazing contribute to my life. I am doing everything possible to become able to get a D.A.D”
