My name is Dorothy Liwag and I am an operating room registered nurse at Seattle Children's Hospital. I am raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to participate in their Winter Pineapple Classic 5K marathon.
The LLS's mission is to: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children, adolescents and young adults under the age of 20 years old. When LLS was founded in 1949, a blood cancer diagnosis was almost always fatal. Most leukemia patients, especially children, died within three months. Even by the mid-1950's, when the first-generation chemotherapy drugs began appearing, the disease remained a stubborn challenge.
Money that is donated will go towards saving lives by funding innovative research. Survival rates have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled for blood cancer patients thanks to donations and fundraising efforts, such as participating in the Winter Pineapple Classic 5K Marathon.
As a pediatric operating room nurse, I've seen what it looks like for a child to return to the hospital for a biopsy for a recurrent tumor. I've had the chance to meet amazing parents and family members who are right by their child's side helping them fight against cancer. I've seen what a child looks like when they've had a long, exhausting day of getting a CT scan, MRI, and finally waiting for a procedure in the OR to change out their central line. I have sung a kid's favorite song with them as I transferred them from their room to the OR before their surgery. I send off specimen in hopes that it is non-cancerous and there are times of joy and times of heartache when receiving the prognosis.
I have had the chance to meet the bravest kids every single day I come into work and it inspires me to do so much more! Your donations will absolutely mean the world to me because it will be going towards something that I am passionate about - giving the chance for all children to live life to the fullest.
