Joyce’s Journey
This past February my mom went in for an annual mammogram and was diagnosed in with Triple Negative BRCA-1 Positive Breast Cancer. A diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer means that the three most common types of receptors known to fuel most breast cancer growth–estrogen, progesterone, and the HER-2/neu gene are not present in the cancer tumor. Triple negative breast cancer occurs in about 10-20% of diagnosed breast cancers. Triple negative breast cancer can be more aggressive, and difficult to treat.  Also, the cancer is more likely to spread and recur.
As a family we were as prepared as we could be to travel this journey with my momma, and be her strength. My mom is the most loving, caring and compassionate person I have ever met. She has helped so many and has touched so many lives. Most people recognize my mom by her long beautiful hair and many know her as the “Safeway lady”. She has always been the one to take care of everyone. Moms are NOT supposed to be sick, they are the ones to take care of you and make sure that you are ok. Well my mom is definitely sick seeing her go through this has been an emotional roller coaster.
Battling cancer is a long journey. My mom went through several rounds of chemotherapy down at the Mayo Clinic. Every Wednesday we would make our way down to phoenix to get “poisoned” as she would say. She lost that beautiful hair, all of her muscle strength, lost all feeling in her toes and hands and at times she was so sick that at times we weren’t sure that she would live through chemo. It was a hard day when my mom had to make the decision to stop working; she has worked since she was 14 years old and has been in the grocery business for over 30 years. That was the day I knew my mom needed help and could not do it on her own.
She doesn’t ever give up and she keeps battling on day after day. My mom is by far my hero, a warrior, and a fighter. Despite all of it, she is still the strong, and the beautiful mother that I have always known. This past Thursday she was strong enough to have surgery! My mom completed surgery of a double mastectomy with reconstruction and full hysterectomy. She was released from the hospital and is now in the healing process. I feel like the end of this battle getting close and I have faith that she can get through this.
It has been a long, hard journey and we are SO GRATEFUL to the many people who have prayed and reached out and to so many of you that we have not had a chance to tell I’m sorry! There have been so many ups and downs and she is now moving forward, we ask you to continue to keep her in your prayers! My mother’s strength throughout this journey is admirable.
