Meet Harlie. A fun-loving, intelligent 6 year old girl living in Brisbane, Australia. Harlie loves playing with dolls, dressing up and having fun with her friends.
However, life for Harlie is more challenging than most 6 year olds. Harlie lives with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy meaning she is restricted in her mobility and confined to a wheelchair.
Harlie has routine painful botulinum toxin injections (BTX) to temporarily reduce spasticity, frequent intensive physical therapy, regular medications not to mention the struggles she faces on a daily basis with simple tasks, that she is 100% dependant on the people around her to achieve. Such as eating, dressing, bathing and everyday menial tasks we take for granted.
Recently Harlie was accepted as a candidate for life altering surgery. The procedure, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), performed by Dr T.S. Park at the St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri, USA, has been proven to permanently reduce spasticity in people with cerebral palsy. What this will mean for Harlie is improvements in all areas of her life including sitting, balance and mobility and ultimately give Harlie the ability to walk. All of these achievements will not be possible without SDR.
This is why we are reaching out to you. We need your help. As a parent there is nothing you wouldn't do to make your child's life the best it possibly can be, however without your generous contributions, giving Harlie this opportunity is quite frankly, out of our reach.
With travel costs, post operative therapy, equipment and the surgery itself being in excess of $120,000 we are reluctantly now in this position, after exploring every possible avenue, where we need your support to make this happen for Harlie. Whether it's a little or a lot, every dollar brings us one step closer to Harlie's dream.
