Having visited Madeira on many occasions I feel the need to help the people living there. I come from Guernsey which is a small Island and its only when things like this happen you realise how small the Island is.

The Funds will be placed into a bank account and sent direct to the parties who require them, food, water, baby cloths etc..

The money will be sent directly to the charity direct not to the goverment.

Madeira wildfires: Evacuations as flames approach Funchal..

More than 400 people have been evacuated on the Portuguese island of Madeira after wildfires destroyed buildings near the capital, Funchal.

Regional President Miguel Albuquerque said one person had suffered serious burns and scores of others had needed treatment for the effects of smoke.

At least 27 homes had been destroyed on the popular holiday island, off north-west Africa, he added.

Smoke fanned by strong winds has also disrupted flights at the airport.

Mr Albuquerque told reporters that fires encroaching on Funchal were now under control and cooler temperatures forecast for Wednesday should ease the situation.

Firefighters said steep hills and dense woodland were making it difficult to tackle the flames.

"The Madeira Regional Government requested support for the situation that is taking place in Funchal and today a plane the Air Force will transport the second national commander accompanied by a team formed by the GIPS [Group Protection Intervention and Relief] GNR by professional firefighters and volunteer firefighters and members of the INEM [National Institute of Emergency Medicine], "said the Prime Minister, António Costa, told reporters after a meeting at the National Civil Protection Authority in Carnaxide
