A few times in life, I gave a few bucks to someone who did not deserve help, and I felt like a sucker later on. But other times made up for it, and I got a chance to feel good when the small amount I could afford made a big difference for someone who deserved it so much.

Sometimes, in spite of all the hard work of a lifetime, when people try their best, when they plan, save, hope, dream, pray, and give to others, life plays a cruel trick on a family. Jeff and Gail Smith with their two small children, ages 5 and 8, are such a family.

At 8 years old, Jeff began working at the Westside Curb Market, a small business started by his grandfather. After high school, Jeff started full-time, and eventually took over the business from his father, keeping it in the family. Over the years, with hard work, long hours, and many sleepless nights, Jeff kept the small business alive.

But Jeff has been battling Lymphoma since January 2015 and is in now at Emory Hospital in Atlanta after a stem-cell transplant. He’ll spend 3 long months in the hospital, then continue his care at home.

Jeff and Gail have insurance through his wife's employer but deductibles, co-pays and medication expenses have depleted their savings. Gail’s employer will allow her to take off work to be with Jeff, but the family can't afford that loss of income.

Jeff and Gail Smith are good people. They and their children need and deserve help. Maybe they won’t ask for that help, but people who know and love them will ask. Maybe this is a chance for all of us to feel good.
