I have struggled with anorexia for 12 years now and have received various different treatments here in Australia, including at a residential centre. I have made small steps forward, but the viscious eating disorder manages to creep its way back into my life each time. Every second of every day my mind is preoccupied with thoughts of food - when and what I will be eating and second guessing every single descion. I am beyond exhausted of this mental tortue and want more than anything to have space left in my brain to think about things a normal 25 year old should be worrying about.
Residential treatment in Australia seems to all be the same - focused on getting ones weight up in a very clinical hospital setting and not treating the person on a whole. Also very little is done to transition the patient back into being able to live outside of the centre once they are discharged. I have spent hours and hours researching worldwide different treatment approachces and facilities and have come across Monte Nido in the USA, which offers an hollistic approach in a warm nurturing environment where the patient is able to assist in meal preparation and learn skills they can integrate into their life when they return home. Nothing like this is offered in Australia and I believe full recovery from my eating disorder would be possible if I were to attend there. Unfortunately due to being an Australian and not a USA resident, it is unable to be covered by health insurance, and with a nightly cost of $1,500 and an average stay of 3 months - I would be unable to afford this myself.
My goal is to raise enough money for me to attend this facility, fully recover and then return to Australia and assist in setting up similar places here. No body deserves to suffer the tortue of an eating disorder and I believe awareness needs to be raised about the lack of hollstic treatment available in Australia.
I would be beyond grateful for any contribution, no matter how small. I am 100% committed to my recovery and to begin a meaningful life being able to give back and assist many others in battling this awful illness.
