My son Steven is an incredibly compassionate, bright and outgoing 28 year old whom has always managed to bring a smile to those around him, even in the darkest of times. His life has been centered around creating adventures and always making the best of a situation. As many people don’t know, Steven, for the past eight years has been struggling with recurrent bouts of cancer. He has kept very private about his health struggles always putting on a smile for the world to see. People his age were and are not supposed to get cancer. At the end of March, right after a move to California, he went in to the doctor for what he assumed were minor issues and for an check-up. When we were called with the PET scan results my heart stopped and my life changed forever. Colon cancer was not only back after years of remission, but, it had spread to his kidneys, lungs, spleen, and brain.
Due to the location, and size of tumors, surgery is not an option for all organs. He completed a strenuous 12-week cycle of immunotherapy, radiation and chemotherapy, but just found out that he will have to start another strenuous cycle in September, as the previous therapy was not completely successful. The team of doctors are still working to come up with the best plan of treatment, including clinical trials for new medications and a solid plan for continued care after the next treatment.
He has taken on this diagnosis with a smile and an attitude ready to fight. This will be a battle, but with so many people who know and love Steven and his family, he has an army behind him. That being said, there are so many people looking to help, so we’ve started this page in hopes of raising money for the family to offset any costs that we may face in this upcoming battle.
This GoFundMe is something he has fought me on, tooth-and-nail, but it has come to a point where help from family, friends and community is much needed.
Right now it’s too early to estimate the ultimate cost of his previous treatment, but even after insurance it is well within the 6-digit numbers. Since he was diagnosed he was not able to work full-time as the illness and hospital visits are full-time in and of themselves. I only ask for help to pay our medical bills in the coming months until he is physically ready to return to work and get his life back.
Steven will continually need all of the positive thoughts, prayers, support and smiles throughout these next few months. With a large community who loves him, he will undoubtedly have the endless support that he needs throughout this whole process.
