On August 6th, 2016 Katie Otero-Henriquez went to the emergency room due to a stomach ache. After multiple test, it was confirmed that Katie(10 yrs) was diagnosed with Leukemia. On August 8th, she started her first set of chemotherapy and is currently in intensive care.

Katie was supposed to start fourth grade this year with all her friends. Sadly because of this disease, she will take some time off due to her condition. She has a loving family who are currently struggling with the fact that their daughter/sister is going through such a horrible disease at such a young age. Katie's father recently lost his job of nine years and are all struggling to keep up with the bills.

Katie has medicaid but, unfortunately, there is a limit to the amount they can pay. The money we raise will specifically go to those cost and to Katie's family.

I ask of you, sincerely, to help us out. Whether it’s with a share, prayer, or a small donation. We appreciate anything and are so grateful for all your help. We pray and hope that Katie makes a full recovery and is back to her normal routine.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please share this story and help us make this turn into an amazing outcome.

Sincerely,
The Otero- Henriquez Family

Por favor tome el tiempo para leer la historia de Katie;

Sinceramente,
La Familia Otero-Henriquez

Katie Update October 5, 2016:

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and to all who have been supporting the family in so many ways. Katie is a special child who is really giving this illness the good fight. Her mother hasn’t left the hospital in two months and her dad is working day jobs when possible so they continue to need our collective support.

As for our kiddo and her medical updates:

First, she has a long road of recovery ahead of her. After two months in the bed without movement, her muscles have become very weak. She can’t lift her hands to use a communication board or write on the dry-erase board. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating to her and is causing her to become more and more depressed.

The fluid in Katie’s belly has decreased some as a result of removing a portion of her bowel (through two surgeries about two weeks ago). Due to the swelling and fluid retention from the surgery, the belly has not descended enough for Katie’s lungs to fully expand on their own. Therefore, they have not been able to get her off the ventilator. The surgical team has made the decision for Katie to have a tracheotomy. The thought is that with a trach in place she will be able to move more readily and be more available for Speech, Occupational and Physical therapies.

Katie’s muscles are extremely weak, since she has not been able to get out of bed in about two months. Chemo is currently on hold. They don’t know how long the trach will need to remain in place. Recovery time from the surgery will be 5-7 days during which Katie cannot move much and will be sedated most of the time and have consistent pain killers to help keep her comfortable.

The Speech Therapist has been working with her to give her a communication board to help her communicate, but currently she is too weak to hold up her head or lift her arm to write or point to something she wants. As OT and PT work more with her and her mobility increases after the Trach is placed, hopefully some of those muscles can begin to be built back up.

Keep the positive thoughts and prayers coming! Any assistance you can provide in terms of monetary donations would be very much appreciated by Katie’s family.
