School Toilets & Showers in PNG
Donation protected
During April this year I travelled to the remote village Waisa as part of my Year 12 Independent Project to gain some insight into the lives of young women in Papua New Guinea. I spent most of my time with my fathers friend Wandagii Pako and became very good friends with his daughter Jennifer. The journey opened my eyes to not only her life, but my own life as well. We were two young women growing up in completely different cultures but experiencing very similar things. Jennifer taught me much about responsibilities and culture but what I found most prominent was the importance of education in many young women’s lives. It shocked me then to visit the local school and find that the toilets were merely tin sheds with holes in the ground. There were no bathrooms or showers which meant that the students who were boarding had to wash in mountain streams. After some research, I discovered that this lack of hygiene facilities was causing serious problems in many developing countries around the world and was a major reason for young girls dropping out of school when they reach puberty.
My name is Lilia Alpers, I'm in year 12 at the Perth Waldorf School where our own new toilets are currently under construction. With your help I aim to make this simple privilege available to students attending Ivingoi Provincial High School in Papua New Guinea through the building of toilets bathroom facilities. I will be so so grateful for any support you can offer, if you cannot donate please share with your friends and family, it would be much appreciated. No donation is too small, just as this project is only a small step in changing a much greater problem.
