Fast&Furious Toddler: Help Me Walk

Many of you have followed Collier's story from his birth; from his precarious days in the hospital to when he finally came home fifteen months later. His growth and development since then have been phenomenal—everybody says so! But he's still behind. We remain hopeful, but his physical therapists can't guarantee whether he'll ever be able to walk. So we are doing everything we can to help his mobility. We got him a little rocking chair and he loves pushing with his legs to rock back and forth.  And now he is getting up on all fours by himself and understanding so much of what we say.  It’s so exciting to watch him.

This adaptive tricycle will help him move around, and it can carry his ventilator, oxygen and feeding pump with him. The equipment he has weighs far more than he does, and seriously limits where he can go on his own. It will not only give him mobility, but it will continue to strengthen his leg muscles to help him gain the strength to walk.

All of this is incredibly expensive. We feel lucky and blessed so far that we have been able to deal with it. We both work, Collier has both private insurance and Medicaid, and he has been helped by a few charities as well. But there are so many other costs not covered: increased utility bills to run his equipment 24 hours a day; driving back and forth to the hospital every day for over a year; portions of the generator he needs. The list goes on, and we've watched our bank accounts dwindle. We are also looking at several future home modifications, such as a ramp, which we may not have the budget to cover through Medicaid. His Medicaid waiver program covers some of the tricycle and accessories that he needs but not all.

So we are reaching out this one time. We know many of you have wanted to and were willing to help in the past, and we never really knew what kind of help to ask for.

We’ll use the funds to cover the tricycle costs first.  Any further donations we’ll use to build the ramp, replenish the generator costs and pay for other costs associated with his care. We may be able to get the trike in the next couple of weeks! Collier is excited to be able to ride around and no be tethered to a cart.  We are so excited to see him have fun. Many thanks for considering our campaign.

We FINALLY took the trike to Elon today. Collier loved it! We triked from Inman, by the library, past Alamance and Schar, to see the Swan at Lake Mary Nell and back. We talked about the books in Belk Library. He loves books. He is doing more and more of the work pushing the trike. He is also walking short distances with leg braces and a walker. As soon as he wakes up in the morning, he starts asking to "Go Out!" Thank you again for the help. I wanted you to see that it is paying off.

It's about time for an update! Collier is riding his trike frequently and going farther and pushing harder. He loves ringing the bell and looking at the sky. He's has new leg braces too and these have been a huge help. The video posted was two weeks ago. Now, he can walk and support all of his weight with the braces while holding our hands for balance. He continues to amaze us. He is saying lots of words (especially "up" and "out") and loves to play with his brother. He crawls or walks around the house several times a day. He loves reading books and asks for them all day. We're looking into walkers for school next fall. Thank you again for your help. It's definitely paying off!

We have a ramp! The kind and talented folks at Life's Journey UCC built Collier an awesome ramp this morning. We used your donations to pay for materials and to make a donation to their ministry. We tried out the new wheelchair and we'll take the trike for a spin later. We are also in the process of looking at power wheelchairs to get ready to go to preschool next year. So the ramp is a huge help. Many, many thanks!

We've taken the trike out several times. We took it out Saturday and Sunday and he is starting to have fun and smile. The cooler weather is helping. When he gets comfortable, we'll go beyond our neighborhood. During therapy, he is really working his legs and they are getting stronger. More exciting news: in November, we are getting a ramp. Thanks for all the help. It is paying off already!
