Matthew's North Star Service Dog

When Matthew turned 4, he was diagnosed with Asperger's. When the doctors told us, our little man burst into tears. He turned to me with tears pouring down his face, and said, "Mommy, I do not have ass boogers!" There wasn't a sound in the room. Every medical professional sat there in complete and total amazement at the little one who was sitting in the chair, looking absolutely crushed. A few of them even had tears in their eyes. They said no child had ever said that to them before. They also said that because he was on the Autism Spectrum, they would say Autism from then on.
No one knows for sure if Matthew heard the word right, but later that evening while he was at his grandparents house, he told his Grandma and Grandpa that he had Awesomautism, pronounced awesome-a-tism!!!!
We asked him what he had just said and he repeated the word again. We never corrected him, and he would tell everyone that he had Awesomautism. Matthew is such a positive little guy.
Matthew's assistance dog, North Star Sansa, will provide him with comfort, security and an abundance of socialization opportunities. Sansa will be able to help calm Matthew down in difficult situations, as both her breeding and specific socialization will prepare her to do. This North Star dog's help will extend beyond the emotional, but also towards Matthew's growing social and educational needs.
North Star Foundation is a 501 (c) 3, nonprofit organization (EIN # 06-1589586) whose mission is to help children who face challenges through animal assisted therapy, and assistance and dog placements. They have been serving children who face social and emotional challenges for sixteen years. All money raised through this campaign will go to support our partnership with Matthew and North Star Sansa, and your invaluable help in raising the funds is greatly appreciated!
