Rennick's Vision Quest

Donation protected
We made our goal!  Thank you all so much.

In a little over 24 hours we (and you) did it! Between family, friends, friends of friends, FB, and folks of faith we raised the funds to get Rennick eSight. It will take 3-4 weeks to build his glasses and we'll send an update when we receive them.

We cannot thank all of you enough - those who donated, those who promoted, those who cared - thank you from all of us. We are truly blessed and fortunate to be a part of this great community - online and physical.

Marieke and I have run the emotional gamut since we launched this. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And most of all, Rennick thanks you all for helping him get a piece of technology that will give him a new view of the world around him.

Rennick's story:
My name is Rennick Heatwole and I am from Anchorage, Alaska. I was born with optic-nerve hypoplasia (ONH). This is an eye disorder that makes my optic nerve much smaller than the average person’s and makes my sight very restricted. I cannot read large text from over roughly two feet. I have dealt with this my whole life. It won’t get any worse but it will also not get better. My family has helped me try many different tools, but nothing has seemed to improve my eyesight and glasses cannot help.

Recently, my family discovered eSight, http://www.esighteyewear.com/ . ESight is a groundbreaking technology that helps people like me with eye disorders see through an HD camera. When I tried eSight for the first time in Seattle, I almost cried. What normally was a misshapen object of color had now become a clear image. I could see things ahead of me instead of waiting for people to direct my attention to them.

ESight would help me in many ways. In school, I can’t see the board until I am 2 to 3 feet away from it. When something is being presented in class, I usually cannot see it. In Alaska, we are often visited by moose, but I am unable to see them. ESight would help me see and experience these things the same way my friends and family do.

I have always loved playing and watching sports. I feel fortunate every day that I can see enough to play soccer, but I can only see a neon ball and have to judge the game based on the position of players. When I am on the sidelines, I cannot see the ball, no matter its color, because of the distance. ESight would also allow me to watch live sporting events for the first time.

ESight gives me the clear vision I need to be able to see anything. As a new technology, the cost is $15,000.  In order to buy an eSight set, I am working with my mom and dad to contact friends and family to help me raise the money.  I’ve already received money and commitments to help from many people.  When I heard that people had already given money, it made me feel great inside.  I felt like people were believing in me and wanting to help.

Thank you for reading little bit about my condition and how your donations can help me buy this technology that will change my life.  If you want to learn more about it or how I intend to use it, please contact me or my parents.

(PS - this is Mike - Rennick's father - I wanted to add that all funds raised are for Rennick be able to purchase a set of eSight glasses.  If you have any questions, I'm happy to talk with you about it.  Thank you for considering Rennick's request.)
