Matt Goodrich's medical bills

Donation protected
On August 2, 2016 Matt Goodrich  fell into a  15ft dry  well in Kamalo on Molokai, while attempting to mark and cover it for safety. Matt suffered a head injury and concussion, a broken rib,  6 fractured vertebrae  some of which are compression and others burst fractures.

Somehow Matt  was able to climb out of the well with these injuries before dark on the evening of the  2nd. Once out he was unable to stand and spent the next two days crawling without food or water to the main road for help.   Thankfully  his faithful canine companions Buhla and Lei Lei  did not leave his side  for the 48 hrs. journey to safety . Matt  was  found August 4th  on  Kamehameha Hwy by the police and soon after was medivacted  to Queens Hospital in Honolulu.  His trusted  fur babies were dropped off at  their house and are being  taken care of by  dear friends. Buhla and Lee Lei are fine and waiting for their Matty to come home.

Emillia was on the mainland  and flew  home as soon  as Matt was flown to  Oahu and has been  at his side with  family and friends  for the  past three weeks both at Queens  Spinal Center and The Rehabilitation Hospital of  the Pacific where  he has  received the most  awesome care  from the   doctors, nurses,  interns,  physical and occupational therapists,  and aids  for which Matt and Emillia are truly grateful.

It is a miracle  that  the spinal cord was not damaged  and  Matt should fully  recover  his formal  mobility. However,  he is in a upper body  brace and cast  shoes -  broken toes-  and it will be 6-12 mos before he will be able to resume  his  work as a carpenter.

You can imagine the many challenges that face Matt and Emillia as they work toward his recovery. The first is the gap between what insurance will cover and the actual costs for Matt’s care. Insurance  has covered the bulk of the medical  but there 20% co-pay capped at $6,600.

Due to insurance rules  Matt has had  to leave  the in patient hospital and move to out- patient care here in HNL.  Emillia has been granted a short leave of absence from work but will need to be available to assist Matt as he moves from out-patient care to their home in Molokai. There will also need to be modifications  made  for the home to  help him recover  and be mobile within the home. There are travel chlannges as well as  they live on the East end of Molokai  so to get physical therapy and other appointments will take time and  Matt will need  to move on a  wheeled walker and eventually crutches. Insurance does not cover any of these additional expenses.

Insurance will not cover any of the  items that Matt needs other than a walker or crutches  and actually a wheel chair is easier for him to get around with in the house.

Matt is applying for disability  to help cover his lost income but it will take 3-5 mos  for that to  come  through if approved.

Emillia has been able to take one month leave with pay  from  the non-profit she works for but that will end September 10th.  Hopefully  they will be back on Molokai and able to cope. She will still need to take time off to travel with Matt to doctor appointments and physical therapy both on Molokai and in Honolulu.

Your generous donation will help cover the  medical expenses,  loss of income,  airfare to  Oahu for follow up appointments and  possible litigation as the accident was caused by the land owners negligence around the well.

Your  help and assistance is greatly appreciated and will  help to  ease Matt’s mind so he can focus on healing and getting his life back.

We are truly lucky that he is still with us and will be able to recover fully from his injuries. It is  nothing less than  a miracle  that he made it although we are sure  that the dogs also played a part by staying by his side to provide warmth and safety in the night ( wild boars).
