The Bacchus Marsh Junior Football/Netball Club require your support to raise some much needed funds for a local and very well loved family recently confronted with the most devastating and cruel news.

Erin Shepheard is a beautiful outgoing 18 year old who was busy studying year 12 and working part time at Bacchus Marsh IGA supermarket.  Her one great love was playing women’s football for the Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club – Youth Girls Team.

On the 3rd of July Erin came home from work with a headache, went to bed and on the Sunday she woke up with blurred vision and was finding it hard to walk.  Erin presented at the Bacchus Marsh & Melton Memorial Hospital Emergency Department on Sunday night with no diagnosis.

By Monday morning Erin was forced to crawl to her bedroom, unable to walk.  An ambulance took her immediately to Sunshine Emergency where she presented with no feeling from her chest down and unable to see. Tests discovered legions on her spine and on her brain.  Erin was given a spinal tap to take spinal fluid for testing and the doctors decided to give her 5 plasma transfusions every second day for 5 days.  It was then discovered she had two diseases ADEM and NMO.

·         Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is characterized by a brief but widespread attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord that damages myelin – the protective covering of nerve fibers; and

·         Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that predominantly affects the optic nerves and spinal cord.

Doctors have informed her dad, Darren Shepheard, there is a very slim chance of her ever walking again and that she will not get her colour vision back.  Erin will need to be transferred to a spinal rehabilitation unit in order for her to learn how to live with what little movement she has left in the top half of her body. This is devastating news for Erin. Her passion was footy and she was showing amazing potential out on the field with her mates.

This tragedy has meant her dad Darren, the sole parent of three children aged 18, 10 and 9 is unable to continue working and will need to be Erin’s full time carer.   The family will require a new vehicle that will allow Erin to be transported to appointments in her wheelchair. Additional funds will also allow for the ongoing therapy Erin will require on a daily basis for the rest of her life.
