Sponsor a 13-year old Rapper!
My name is Joe Marino and this fundraiser is for my 13-year old son, Devon. He is in the 7th grade, and gets good grades in school. He also plays trombone and baritone for his middle school band, and was recently accepted into the local honor band program where he had the privilege of playing alongside the top musicians in our area within his age group. On top of all that, he helps out the community through his involvement with the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I couldn't be more proud to call myself his father.
About a month ago, Devon surprised me with an announcement that he wanted to be a rapper. At first I thought it was a joke but that was before I heard his lyrics for the first time. Once I did however, I was completely blown away! He is a lyrical genius and many of his songs have a comedic element to them so they are all quite enjoyable to listen to!
He has assured me that he is absolutely serious about becoming a rapper, and that he wants to make a name for himself doing this. In the past, whenever he as expressed this amount of dedication towards something, he has always excelled at it so I am behind him 100%. This is the main reason I decided to create this fundraiser for him.
I can already tell that Devon is on his way to stardom, but there's only one problem that's holding him back... times have been very tough for us financially, and we cannot afford the proper recording equipment, nor can we afford the fees at any of the local recording studios to get the songs he made professionally recorded (they can be VERY expensive!).
My wife and I do the best we can to support our family - usually taking any type of side jobs we can find (which are pretty sparse these days) to earn some extra income, but bills are mounting and what little funds we do have to spare, normally go towards Devon's and his 11-yr old brother's extracurricular and after-school activities so we are financially drained at the moment and are having a hard time coming up with the money to buy the equipment that he needs to pursue this dream of his.
I do have some musical background of my own though, and that's mixed with over a decade of work experience in the IT sector so I was able to find some free (open source) audio production software online and I also have a half-way decent computer to produce with already (it's nowhere near "top-of-the-line", but it should suffice for now) which drastically cuts the costs involved with setting up a home studio.
If you would like to help out by purchasing or donating any of the items he needs instead of making a monetary contribution, that would also be greatly appreciated! Here's a list I've prepared with links to the items we plan to purchase with he money from this fundraiser:
Digital Audio Interface Recording Software: http://www.amazon.com/Avid-Tools-Express-Mbox-Mini/dp/B007JRNE3W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365082613&sr=8-1&keywords=mbox
All in all, these items amount to about $500 including shipping, processing fees, and a little wiggle room to buy cables and the like. Beyond this $500 goal, any additional funds collected from this campaign will go into a savings account that will only be used to cover Devon's future musical endeavors. If he becomes successful enough to support himself doing this, leftover funds from this fundraiser will be deposited into a college fund that will help to offset the costs of joining the Naval Academy, or his college of choice.
And if he takes off and makes the big time (knock on wood), a considerable out-of-pocket charitable donation will be made (no less than 2x the TOTAL funds collected from this campaign) to the Nashville LPD-13 division of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. So any way you look at it, this money will definitely be going to a good cause! We thank you in advance for your support, and God bless.
P.S. If you are a sponsor at the $20 level or above, please send us a message with your mailing address so we know where to send your photo(s) and/or autographed CD.
We would still like to eventually start our own recording studio however, ensuring to follow in the footsteps of Notes for Notes by opening it up to young musicians at no cost. That being said, we've decided to shut down this fundraiser and start a whole new one that's focused on building a new recording studio so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that one once we've ironed out all the details. The funds that were collected from this fundraiser will be automatically transferred over into the new one.
Thanks again to everyone who donated to this fundraiser. Your support means so much to us and we will always remember your gestures of kindness to help a young rapper get his start and turn his dreams into a reality.
People have been asking me "why do you need $500 to record your songs? Why can't you just go to wal-mart and buy a $10 mic?" Well obviously, these people have no clue what it takes to record a song/album that when people are done listening to it, they say "wow, that was amazing"! That's what I'm aiming for here, folks.
I used a $10 mic to record "Plz Halp Meh" and I had to redo it like 20 times just to get a halfway decent recording then it took several hours to remove the background noise and whatnot. After all that, I was left with an end product that sounded alright, but it was nowhere near CD quality. That may be OK for a silly little picture video on YouTube, but it's definitely not OK for an actual song!
As serious as I am about this, I have other things going on in my life too so I don't have time for all that nonsense! It needs to be done right from the start if I'm going to do this at all. Plus, I'm proud of the songs I wrote and I don't want to put them out there sounding like crap! I could take my songs to a professional recording studio, but it would probably wind up costing me $500 or more just to record one or two songs!! Why do that when for the same price, I can record all the songs I want?
And maybe one day, I could open up my own recording studio using all the knowledge I gained from doing it on my own. I'm planning for my future here people, so why don't yall just quit yer hatin and just help a brother out for a change?
To all my friends, family and fans who are behind me on this, THANK YOU for your support! You are the reason I am not giving up on this dream. I know that there are more good people out there who are willing and able to provide financial assistance, but they are apparently hard to find so it's going to take a little while longer than I thought it would to get these songs recorded.
Until then, I may do some more silly/fun videos and put them up on YouTube or something along those lines. It's not exactly what I had planned, but hey - at least it's something. Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to get notified when I publish new videos! https://www.youtube.com/djelly54
Yesterday, we gained an additional TWO supporters!
A big THANK YOU goes out to Catherine Rector who donated $25 and thus qualified to receive free digital downloads of all DJelly's upcoming songs... FOR LIFE! Only 3 of these rewards packages remain, so be sure to act fast if you want to grab one !
Catherine will also be receiving an autographed copy of DJelly's debut album (if and when it gets released). We really need your help to make this happen people!
Another special shout-out goes to Jewel Kirby who donated $5 to our cause. Thanks Jewel! We really appreciate your support!
We also have another special announcement to make... Although we have yet to raise all the funds we need to get a song recorded, we thought of another way to show our appreciation to all of our fans & supporters.
So we decided to publish another version of the same debut song, but rapped FASTER (and it sounds amazing)! Check it out: http://youtu.be/0qnPvSrkbIA
Thanks again to all of you who have supported us in a variety of different ways. We wouldn't have even made it this far without those of you who have motivated us with kind words of encouragement. We are looking forward to bringing you some amazing music in the years to come!
