Hi everyone,
My name is Sara Dell. I'm a young nature, child, music and life loving Canadian songwriter and performer (www.saradell.com) who keeps busy pursuing a career full time as a songwriter, artist and musician in Canada and recently also in (Nashville, TN) the United States. I am a very healthy and active person, so I was shocked to be diagnosed this week with a rare (1 in a million) type of skin cancer called Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP). I need to have the cancer surgically extracted from my body as soon as possible to ensure it does not spread further and into my organs and have learned that the most effective, least destructive surgery for this type of cancer is called MOHS' micrographic surgery.
The MOHS' method basically removes one layer of skin and tissue at a time on the operating table, runs tissue biopsy in real time to determine whether they have extracted all of the known cancer cells within the area, and continues removing body tissue layer by layer until the cancer has been completely extracted. This specific, highly efficient single surgery method which ensures by live biopsy that all cancer has been removed in that single day is only available in the USA, and I am booking my surgery with the MAYO Clinic in Rochester Minnesota for late August 2016 (as soon as they can see me). I do not want to waste any time waiting to start fundraising because once my date is booked they require up front payment.
I won't go into more detail besides to explain that from my research, this is the most accurate, fastest and least invasive surgery I can have to try to beat this cancer, and it will cost up to $21,000 CDN ($11,000-$16,000 USD if there are no complications). I also don't know how long I will be unable to work after the surgery, as I won't be able to lift anything or strain for some time after. I will require frequent medical exams and testing, and possibly additional treatments over the next three years to manage my post-operative health. In addition, I am researching effective cancer-killing natural foods/supplements to assist in my recovery and will be doing everything I can to keep my body cancer free afterwards. I was advised to set up a fundraising account here to help me pay for this surgery, the recovery, and expenses related to follow up exams/testing (every three months from Nashville where I intend to continue pursuing my career once I am able) and keeping my body positively cancer free.
My prognosis is good as we caught it fairly early and we are removing it immediately.
