Hello! We are Jeronimo and Karina and we have 2 children, Lucia with 3 years and Daniel with 2 years.

   Our daughter Lucia has two rare genetic diseases and none of these diseases can be cured.

At her three months of life was diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia.The Congenital hyperinsulinism affects approximately 1 in 50.000 newborns. This condition that causes individuals to have abnormally high levels of insulin, which is a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels.

People with this condition have frequent episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

In infants and young children, these episodes are characterized by a lack of energy (lethargy), irritability, or difficulty feeding. Repeated episodes of low blood sugar increase the risk for serious complications such as breathing difficulties, seizures, intellectual disability, vision loss, brain damage and coma.

   After that, when she had 8 months of life, she start with seizures, but we received the second diagnosis of other rare genetic disease. The name is Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Current estimates place Tuberous Sclerosis Complex affected births at one in 6.000.

TSC, is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs. The aspects of TSC that most strongly impact quality of life are generally associated with the brain: seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability and autism.

This disease also generates particular tumors in the brain called SEGA (Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma). Because these tumors are found in the ventricles, the fluid-filled spaces within the brain, they can obstruct spinal fluid flow and cause neurologic symptoms.

   Lucia right now has 7 SEGA tumors in the brain. For this reason every 3 months has an MRI to control the size of the tumors and she started two years ago with a chemotherapy treatment, considering that some of these tumors were quite large and risky.

   Every day our daughter has to take many drugs to be well (chemotherapy, for chemotherapy side effects, for seizures, for blood sugar, etc).

   We are trying to take our daughter to an Specialized Hospital in Philadelphia, where she is going to have treatment and probably have removed a tumor from her pancreas.

   This is the reason why we need your donations, to cover the expensive costs in Philadelphia.

   Our daughter is a wonderful human being, extremely strong and a fighter since birth and we love her so much. Because all that and much more she deserves all our efforts  and we will do everything  the possible and the impossible for her ... , that's why we are telling you our story and opening our hearts and our situation, to help us to keep going forward and be very happy and very healthy.

Hola! Somos Jeronimo y Karina. Somos Uruguayos pero vivimos en Orlando, Florida USA. Tenemos 2 hijos, Lucía de 3 años y Daniel de 2.

   Nuestra hija Lucía tiene dos enfermedades genéticas raras.

   A sus tres meses de vida fue diagnosticada con Hiperinsulinemia.El hiperinsulinismo congénito afecta a aproximadamente 1 de cada 50.000 recién nacidos. Esta condición hace que las personas tengan niveles anormalmente altos de insulina, que es la hormona que ayuda a controlar los niveles de azúcar en la sangre.

Las personas con esta afección tienen frecuentes episodios de bajo nivel de azúcar en sangre (hipoglucemia).

En los lactantes y niños de corta edad, estos episodios se caracterizan por falta de energía (letargo), irritabilidad, o dificultad para alimentarse. Los episodios repetidos de baja azúcar en la sangre aumentan el riesgo de complicaciones graves, como dificultad respiratoria, convulsiones, retraso mental, pérdida de la visión, daño cerebral y coma.

   Después de eso, cuando ella tenía 8 meses de vida, comenzó a tener convulsiones, pero recibió el segundo diagnóstico de otra enfermedad genética rara. El nombre es Esclerosis tuberosa.

Las estimaciones actuales de Esclerosis Tuberosa muestran que afectada uno de cada 6.000 nacimientos.

E.T, es un trastorno genético que causa la formación de tumores en muchos órganos diferentes, principalmente en el cerebro, los ojos, el corazón, los riñones, la piel y los pulmones. Los aspectos de E.T que impactan más fuertemente la calidad de vida se asocian generalmente con el cerebro: convulsiones, retraso del desarrollo, retraso mental y el autismo.

Esta enfermedad también genera unos particulares tumores en el cerebro llamados SEGA. (astrocitoma subependimario gigante de células). Debido a que estos tumores se encuentran en los ventrículos (los espacios llenos de líquido dentro del cerebro), pueden obstruir el flujo de fluido espinal y causar síntomas neurológicos (hidrocefalia)

   Lucia ahora tiene 7 tumores SEGA en el cerebro. Por esta razón, cada 3 meses tiene una resonancia magnética para controlar el tamaño de los tumores y hace dos años que está con un tratamiento de quimioterapia porque el tamaño de algunos tumores presentaba un alto riesgo para ella.

   Cada día nuestra hija tiene que tomar varios medicamentos para estar bien (quimioterapia, para efectos secundarios de la quimioterapia, para las convulsiones, para el azúcar en la sangre, etc).

   Tenemos que llevar a Luci Filadelfia, a un hospital especializado en Hiperinsulinemia, los que por su única tecnología, pueden ser capaces de darnos una respuesta sobre la condición de Lucia, para ver qué podemos hacer para mejorar su calidad de vida respecto a una de sus condiciones. El problema es que por ser en otro estado del que vivimos nosotros, su seguro médico no cubre fuera de Florida.

   Esta es la razón  por la que necesitamos sus donaciones, para cubrir los altos costos en Filadelfia.

   Nuestra hija es un ser humano maravilloso, extremadamente fuerte y una luchadora desde el nacimiento. La amamos con todo nuestro corazón. Ella se merece todos nuestros esfuerzos y vamos a hacer todo lo posible y lo imposible por ella ...,

Por esto y mucho más eso que estamos contando nuestra historia y abriendo nuestros corazones y nuestra situación, para que nos ayuden a seguir adelante, a que sea muy feliz y muy saludable.
