Chelsea Port Needs Our Help!!!!!

Donation protected
On Friday, June 17, 2016, just prior to what should have been a happy Father’s Day weekend, Chelsea Marie Port was involved in a freak accident involving her beloved horse Patton and a riding lawn mower.

The love of her life, Craig, a decorated United States Marine and a veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, was across the country in Virginia on a work assignment. As always, on such occasions, Chelsea was in charge of their menagerie of animals, the house and yard maintenance.

That evening, Chelsea was mowing the pasture when the mower ran out of gas. Rather than leave the mower in the field, Chelsea, being Miss Get r Done, hooked up her horse, hopped on and pulled the mower back up to the barn. As she was throwing her leg over to dismount, there was a clap of thunder that startled Patton throwing Chelsea to the ground and the now frantic horse, bolted and pulled the riding lawn mower over the top of Chelsea, breaking her neck, and leaving her completely paralyzed, unable to move, nor call for help.

Here is where fate stepped in and provided an angel in the form of a 10 year old neighbor girl. The little girl noticed Patton loose and insisted to her father that they needed to check. After several minutes of insisting, she grabbed Patton’s lead and headed toward the barn. The girl’s father and uncle were close behind. She found Chelsea lying face down in the mud and called 911. Later we learned that the uncle laid down in the mud next to Chelsea to keep her calm and awake and to get the information that the paramedics would need.

So, here she is now, in Harborview Medical Center since that night, having endured a 10 lb. weight stretching her neck for 24 hours until the neurosurgery could be completed to put her broken neck back together with pins and plates. She is mostly paralyzed from the shoulders down but is gaining some movement and feeling as the days and weeks of rehab pass. Little progressions are met with extreme joy by each and every one of us that hold a piece of Chelsea in our hearts. She is making progress and amazing the therapists, doctors and all of us with her strength and will to walk again.

She will have tremendous medical bills and, as of now, unable to work as a Pediatric Dental Assistant at the UW Pediatric Dentistry where she enjoyed helping children.

Renovations are needed to her home to accommodate her disability, doors need to be widened and the bathroom remodeled to accommodate her needs, and in home medical care, all things not covered by insurance. She will need a wheelchair accessible van and gas to travel the 90 mile round trip for therapy three times a week. All of these add up to a tremendous expense that cannot be taken care of solely on Craig’s salary. As you can guess, these funds are needed as soon as possible to get Chelsea and Craig's home ready for her release from the hospital.

So please help us help her and Craig as she strives to walk again and with great luck, and hard work, ride again.

Thank you so much for your consideration, sympathies and, most importantly, your prayers. We promise to keep you updated on her progress.
