Liz's Classroom Fund!

Hi there! :)

I'm a soon-to-be third year, first grade teacher. I teach in a private school in Harlem, where most of the students and families are scholarship students. Being a part of a small private school (only one class per grade!) is great because it inspires such a warm community where you get to see everyone grow. However... when it comes to getting materials, it is your responsibility to supply your classroom with the materials you need.

My first year was hard. I spent the entire summer draining my bank account so that my class would be perfect... Then I broke my arm, was out of work for a month, and as soon as I got back, my classroom had a huge flood from upstairs that destroyed 90% of the things in my room. Last year my summer was spent trying to fix the things that were broken/missing/damaged, and now here I am, trying to put all the pieces back together.

Here are some of the things I'm hoping to spend money on:

* Leveled Readers for the class
Students in first grade can be anywhere from a pre-K reading level to a 2nd grade level - and every year I find I have a TON all spread out. I am hoping to organize my classroom library so that I have enough books for each level, and so that parents don't need to worry about supplementing their child's reading.

* Flexible seating
Flexible seating is a must in the classroom. I currently have one ball chair that was donated by another teacher, and it rotates around the room. It would be an absolute dream to have more than one student use a chair like this at a time -- it really inspires focus.

* Social Studies/Science Materials
Shockingly enough, my classroom doesn't even have a globe! Every time we do map projects, I have to run to the office to grab a spare. Having our own would be great!

These are just a few of the materials I'm hoping to get this year.

I would love to start putting my classroom together at the beginning of August, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated. It is really hard being a teacher, especially when you don't have all the materials you need to help your students learn. But it's the most rewarding job and I love every second of it. :)

Thank you so much!!!
