Hello everyone. This is an important reminder that your credit card statement will reflect as a “WEPAY” charge rather than a “go fund me” charge on your statement.

Those of you who didn’t recognize the charge and disputed it, may now re-commit to your donation! Thank you!

Another great way to contribute is to take advantage of purchasing a “Drew’s Fight” t-shirt on the online store. The store is open through June 2nd.

May 5, 2019 UPDATE: Drew’s Fight Is Now OUR Fight

The Poet family is eager to announce the creation of a (501(c)(3)) non- profit organization in honor of our son Drew.

The domain: DREWPOETFOUNDATION.ORG has been secured and once the foundation and website is up and running an email blast and social media update will be sent out to everyone. Please share with your family and friends as well! In the meantime, the only source of funding for Drew’s foundation is this GFMe page. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS GENEROUSLY GIVEN. These funds will be transferred to the foundation once it has been finalized.

Following Drew’s relapse in January, he began researching his illness.
Until that time, Drew had no doubt he was going to beat it. He just could not believe he might die from cancer. One night, Drew told us how upset he was to read about his diagnosis, prognosis, and the history of Ewings sarcoma. He said, “There has barely been $50 over the last 50 years spent on research since it was discovered. And the chemotherapy drugs are over 30 years old.” He was also angry to learn how little goes into funding all pediatric cancer research and treatments.

FACTS about pediatric cancer:

1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer. 1 in 285. Do you know 285 children?

43 children per DAY or 15,780 children per year are expected to be diagnosed with cancer.

More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have significant health- related issues by the time they are 45 years of age. These health related issues are side-effects of either the cancer or more commonly, the results of treatment. Drew’s cancer treatment has the highest side effects.

Since 1980, fewer than 10 drugs have been developed for use in children with cancer.

The average cost of a stay in the hospital is $40,000. Drew was in the hospital for at least 1 full week EVERY month. Some of his hospital bills were in excess of $95,000.

Only 4% of federal government cancer research funding goes to study pediatric cancer.

Drew would ask us constantly, if we “had heard from his doctor today? Has she found anything she can do for me yet?” It was heartbreaking. He asked us if we could help find something, anything, to help treat and cure his cancer. When the reality set in that he wasn’t going to beat it, he asked us to raise money for his doctor to help her find a cure. He wanted better research, better treatment options, and of course a better outcome. He also said, “Mom, this is going to happen again, according to what I read, to at least 200 or 300 kids again this year.”

In honor of Drew, we will move forward, working hard to raise awareness of Ewings sarcoma, the realities of pediatric rare cancers, and hopefully make a difference. Please support our efforts in honor of Drew. He wanted so bad to live. He wanted so bad to “make something of myself, and now I won’t get that chance.” Let’s all help him make that difference. Let us all continue to remember him, remember his fight, and help drive the change he so desperately wanted.

Drew’s fight has always been our fight. Please make Drew’s fight now your fight too.
