My name is Alex Babington and I am a Major
in the United States Army. I have served since 2000 and I have deployed
to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq on multiple occasions. I spent the
first ten years of my career living in third world countries and have
seen first hand how women and young girls are treated like second-class
citizens and are not expected to reach the same level of achievement as
males.
For the last year the Army has afforded me the opportunity to attend Johns Hopkins University to earn my Masters Degree in Business. Although this has been my most difficult experience intellectually, I have still found the time to give back to my community through volunteerism. For the last 13 years of my life I have been a coach, teacher, and mentor to the Soldiers of our nation and have made it a priority to treat male and female Soldiers as equals. The fact that I have been blessed with two daughters has helped to reinforce this practice.
I say the above to say this. I am forming an all girls ice hockey league for female athletes in the age range of 7-14 years of age. For the past two weekends we received a donation of two free ice slots to run a try hockey for free for girls in this age group. To our surprise with minimal advertising we were able to introduce over 30 young ladies to the sport of ice hockey. Now we need funding in order to ensure we can continue to form this league and need your help to make sure this happens.
What We Need
Hockey is an expensive sport, just to start the sport you need anywhere from $300-$600 in equipment and $250 for uniforms per athlete. Every time they get on the ice to practice for an hour it costs $450. This does not include any games that will cost $450 for the hour and a half ice slot and $116 for the referees. As you can see the cost to start this team and grow the sport has an enormous start up cost. However it is worth it for the future of female athletes. I need your donation to purchase the equipment and get us going with some ice.
The Impact
Female athletes are under represented in all sports throughout the world and are afforded less opportunities then males at all age levels and sports. As a result female athletes are not treated as equals to males from the time they begin youth sports and this attitude and perception is carried by all athletes throughout their lives. By funding this cause you will be leveling the playing field for female athletes and fostering an atmosphere of gender equality in sports that will carry throughout all aspects of their lives. Your donation will positively affect these girls in several ways, this is not just a sport, you are developing our next generation of female leaders!
