Agnew Depot Building Fund

Tax deductible
Update:  The new roof is complete.  Now, we have to finish paying for it.  Once we pay off the roof, it's time to paint the depot back to Southern Pacific colors, similar to the San Leandro, CA depot depicted in the last photo below.

The Agnew depot, located in Santa Clara, CA suffered roof damage over the past two winters.  An inspection of the roof revealed 3 - 4 layers of roofing material, and that the entire roof structure is "spongy."  A new roof was called for and original estimates put the cost at $10,000 - $12,000.  When the old roof was removed, dry rot and other damage was visible and necessary additional work brought the price tag to $16,000.  That's the bad news.

The good news is that we were able to secure two grants and and direct donations so that I am LOWERING our Gofundme goal is $9,000.  A benefactor has advanced us the unfunded portion of the roof replacement cost to get the work done in August - when the contractor was available and before prices went up.  Your donation will pay back the advance we received for the roof replacement.  Our goal is to pay this off by December 31.

The California Central Model Railroad Club has owned the historic Agnew depot, located in Santa Clara, CA, since 1963.  The depot was built by the narrow gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad in 1877 - 1878.  The railroad and depot were acquired by the Southern Pacific railroad around 1900, and the SP standard gauged the tracks and used the depot until the late 1950s.  The club has built an HO scale model railroad depicting scenes from California, Oregon, and the Southwest United States inside the building.

Members come from all walks of life and from many occupations.  Many club members are senior citizens on fixed incomes, making it difficult to pay for needed repairs. Some have been members for over 40 years, and one for over 50 years.  Involvement in the club is a creative outlet and social outlet for it's members.  The club is well known in the model railrroad community, and the depot building is a source of neighborhood pride.

Along with photos of our depot (above, in green), we have included a photo (below) of the San Leandro, CA depot, which has a roof similar to that installed on our Agnew depot.  it is also painted in classic Southern Pacific colors we plan to apply to our building.  Should we be fortunate enough to exceed paying for our roof, the excess will be used for painting, ongoing building maintenance and repair, and other club projects consistent with our mission statement.

Over 130 years old, the Agnew depot is a symbol of the Agnew district of the City of Santa Clara, and is registered as a City historical landmark.  Preserving the depot will allow us to continue to share our depot and model railroad with our neighbors and railroaders from around the country for many years to come.  Your contribution in any amount will be greatly appreciated.
