Paxiiwovem Canoe Journey 2016

Donation protected
L Frank and the entire Paxiiwovem Canoe Family would like thank everyone that helped them reach their GoFundMe goal...in less than 24 hours!! We will continue to accept donations since the project could use additional funds to help cover expenses during their 15 day stay in Washington during the "Tribal Canoe Journey".

About the Project:
The Paxiiwovem Canoe Family
was born from a dream, a vision of continuing the journey to bring back life to the canoe culture of Native California.  Through the leadership of artist L Frank Manriquez and the personal commitment of individuals - endless hours of hard work companied by sweat, dust and tears of joy, in 2014 they built their first canoe in three-weeks and named her, `Iitar (Coyote).

Shortly after the creation of `Iitar, her canoe family accompanied her to Washington State to make her debut at the 2014 "Tribal Canoe Journey".  The Northern canoe elders were so impressed that `Iitar was one of a few canoes there that was built with no nails or screws.

On July 20, a caravan of cars will be escorting `Iitar to make her “maiden voyage” at this year’s “Tribal Canoe Journey”. For the Paxiiwovem Canoe Family this will mark a major milestone as they take their place with the “Families of Canoes” and share their accomplishments and joy with others.

About the Tribal Canoe Journeys:  Canoe Journey 2016 Paddle to Nisqually, continues as an inter-tribal celebration and annual gathering of Northwest indigenous nations. The Paddle to Seattle sparked the annual tribal journey in the Pacific Northwest region in 1989 as part of Washington State’s Centennial celebration. Over 20 Canoe Journeys have been held since 1993, when pullers (the preferred term because of the pulling motion on the paddle) from Canada, Alaska and Washington voyaged from their home communities to Bella Bella, B.C. The Canoe Journey has grown to include over 100 canoes and the participation of Canoe Families from other native canoe cultures, including Native American tribes, First Nations peoples, Alaska Natives, Inuit, Maori, Native Hawaiians, and other indigenous peoples from across the world.
