I have known Don Gilbert for many years and I don't even know where to begin but to call him a hero doesn't even begin to describe him.
I guess a little background on who he is and why he is where is. Several years ago Don was diagnoised with severe congestive heart failure and the prognosis was not good. After many hospital stays they decided to put 3 stints in his heart to buy some time. It did until April 2015 when while standinging in his kitchen he went into cardiac arrest and died. If not for his girlfriend of 10 yrs preforming CPR and breaking 4 ribs in the process and the quick response of the paramedics who shocked him 3 times to get his heart started again he would not be here today. Within hours Don was taken into emergency surgery and received a tripple by-pass. During his recovery he developed pneumonia. The violent caughing caused the the wires holding his sternum together to break. His chest never healed and now suffers sternal seperation which continues to get worse. He lives in constant pain from this but you would rarely hear him complain.
The state of Washington has declared him fully disabled and unable to work. The social security department has denied his claim three times, the last time they had his file reviewed by an orthopedic surgeon in Florida. This doctor never examined Don but the SSI judge chose to take this mans findings over the findings of Don's own cardiologist as well as his primary care doctor who both have stated he cannot work. Don is on his final appeal and he is not very optimistic given the previous decision. He was told that this by-pass surgery would buy him another 5 years but now with the new developments that number has gone down considerably.
January of this year Don and his girlfriend received a 20 day no cause eviction from the landord of the apartment they had shared for 8 yrs. Although no cause was given its believed that the landlord was either selling the building or knew that in this housing market he could easily double the rent. They were well known in the neighborhood for there massive Christmas displays featuring well over 50,000 lights.
With Don unable to work and even with his girlfriend working her self to death to make ends meet they were not able to come up with the money to move in such a short amout of time. All savings had been used just to live on. Leaving most all there belongings behind and having to give up the cat they had for 7 yrs they loaded up there only vehicle a nearly 20 yr old truck, which is about to die and moved into the only place they could find. It is not a transient motel but very close and are now paying weekly almost what there rent was for an entire month. There is absolutely no way to save for a new place and often chose between food and the gas needed so his girlfriend can get to work.
I cannot explain what this man did and there will be a link to the news story at the end. The news could not broadcast the actual horror that unfolded that day and the incredibly unselfish act this man took upon himself in an effort to save a child he had only casually seen over the previous week.
It has only been a week since this tragedy accured and this very humble couple is being forced to relive the horror of what happened only feet from the door of there "home". When they leave they are faced with crime scene paint outlining the little girls blood. They both have been sick over this and don't sleep because of the images in there heads. This money is desperately needed to get them back on there feet. To get them decent housing, transportation, and general household furnishings that they no longer have. They are proud people and would never ask for help. When I spoke with Don about this he cried and at first said no way. Being ashamed that he could not get his girlfriend away from there or have a safe place to see there Grandkids on his own he agreed. The motel has been flooded with calls of from people wanting to help but didn't know how. This money is needed now before they both go crazy or it tears them apart. She works so hard for so little Don says and she deserves so much more. She witnessed about 80% of this horrible attack.
I myself have nothing but this that I can offer them. I know they are good people and if they were able they would pay back every dollar donated. I myself want to thank each and every person that even just took the time to read this not to mention those who donate. In closing I would like to share something Don told me when I made the mistake of asking why he didn't kill this man. He said " it was not my responsibility to take this man's life, it was my responsibility to not let him take the life of that little girl". When asked why he did it he reponded "don't ask stupid questions, why wouldn't I". So please if it's only a dollar lets help this man get back on his feet and maybe enjoy the time he has left.

Sorry I do not know how to respond to individual questions. As for those asking about household stuff. Honestly there is no way to store it or that would be fantastic and thank you all. I think right now the main goal is to get them out of where they are before it takes there soul.
I was asked what if anything the owner there motel had done. Sorry to say but even though he lives at his other motel a half mile away, he has said nothing to them or offered any kind of help. Kinda sad.
UPDATE owner has offered not to raise there room rent 20 dollars a week. If you find this as insulting as I do. I urge you to contact him at the inn at salmon creek [phone redacted] there is also an email on there web page.
