Support the Afterguard youth sailing programs!

2016 has been a ruff year for Afterguard Sailing Academy.

Mary SwiftSwan, co-owner of this business, lost her husband and partner Steve Swan this spring to cancer. His condition went from an unknown to nova in 27 days ending his life April 17th. The kids loved him so much for his patience, kindness and jokes. He is much missed.

All three business cars; Subaru Forester with tow package for hauling boats, Windstar 7 passenger Van for field trips and youth transport plus her husband's transport to music performances (an old Caddy) all went into the shop in June. The office 2006 IMac computer, used for accounting and PR materials, got hot, started pixilating had it fixed then it went to columns of color this week.

Multiple older outboard engines started giving grief in June at the same time and, and per the diver who checks the bottoms, it is past time to haul out, paint and service several of the fleet's boats. Our students are asking for small boat cruising courses 2016/2017. Company owns (3) 2-3 person small boats but 2 of those need $800-1400 of work plus need more of these for a full high school class at $4K to 7K ea. The solid volunteer group for the longest running Wednesday HS program can not stretch to add more weekday dates.

To have teachers for two added HS youth programs will have to depend on paid teachers initially till volunteers can be found, trained and depth of staff developed.

As the month of June came to a close Mary had a heart attack. She survived it well but can’t work 6 to 7 days a week in a row for a while. Between her reduced hours and the loss of Steve's help, she is focusing on increasing enrollment income, generating more charter activity plus exploring other avenues for needed funds to meet increased overhead while a restructure is in progress.

Go Fund can help to bridge this adjustment time to ensure these important youth programs keep going and growing. A grant writer has started working with Afterguard. New volunteer groups are being cultivated. These efforts will take a bit of time. We can keep these programs going with Go Fund Me's interim help.

The USCG Chief's association and the San Francisco Bar Pilots, Vessel Traffic Service and Cal Maritime CSU believe these programs are valuable. They all host visits by the youth to get a view outside of their normal envirornment or/and help as volunteers and mentors. The Oakland Black Police Officer's Association has helped in the past - one of our stalwart volunteers who helped since the start the Wednesday program is a 20 yr Marine vet and 20 yr OPD retired .

The leaders of the 2015/2016, students that received OUSD for-credit programs were collectively able to pay $4200. A huge improvement over the last 6 years. This contributed toward the $27,600 annual cost for these 2 programs delivered over 41 days of instruction for 2604 student hours. Afterguard programs have been given to OUSD schools for 10 years. A third school now wants a program series in the 2016/2017 school year.

Program Notable Results - Afterguard is still in touch with students that took our 2006 programs and those that followed. Many of the Street Academy sailing youth finished high school. That program name is Destination Graduation. One student said impromptu on camera that the reason he graduated, and reason he was not in jail was sailing and was very proud of his accomplishments. Another joined the Navy after he finished HS. He sends us notes from the Pacific as he sees the world.

One of our summer camp grads was a star in his first year at Cal Maritime this school year. He now teaches for Afterguard when on school break. Dylan has been offered a chance to be, possibly the first, Freshman intern for the Bar Pilots for 2 weeks this summer. We will work around his schedule for those dates.

All at Afterguard are very proud of the students we work with. All of our kids. These are good kids worthy of efforts on the part of Afterguard and her many volunteers for mentoring and sail training programs. You can help too.

The Afterguard Sailing Foundation is the heart of our organization. Tally of what is needed for the 2016/2017 school year, (hopefully by August 20th 2016) is $105,000. Break down of our needs is below:

- $8,000 for new outboard motors that the youth can count on for 5 years at least.

- $3500 large screen iMac to replace the one that just died in the office

- $2,000 Hat Embroidery fees, T-shirt and jacket cost toward Afterguard logo wear for volunteers

- $20,000 toward fall pre-program vessel service for yard fees, paint and labor for service of the youth fleet.

- $2,500 vessel equipment added and update- i.e. more life-jackets, flares, new lines... for added students

- $10,000 to re-structure the company plus office coverage during transition.

- $24,000 to purchase more and improve existing small boat fleet for the fall and spring sessions.

- $10,000 for paid instructors to add the 2 new high school programs until volunteers are developed.

- $35,000 for 1 passenger van that can fit 7 to 8 students for transport home after school or for field trips. (A low milage SUV would be great, too.)

If you dont have money to donate, but have a working good condition IMac, outboard engine, boat or vehicle for the program, please contact us by email or call [phone redacted].

The Mission of Afterguard Sailing Academy is a commitment to teach maritime education, water safety hazard awareness, survival skills, teamwork, cooperative effort and leadership combined with learning how to sail a simple boat. Afterguard supports courses for high school aged inner city youth and summer camps for kids.

Operating a boat teaches valuable life skills, provides a sense of responsibility for self and helps to learn how to recognise the need and take timely action to help others. The beauty, peace, sense of adventure and fun of sailing increases confidence till youth are standing tall an making eye contact with all ages. It helps greatly to releases stress levels of the youth that contend with violence in their neighborhoods. These courses make a significant difference for the Oakland youth.
