Help Finish My Life's Work...Comics

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Dante' R Maddox. The first comic book character I ever created came to me in Junior Highschool. I loved comics even then, but had no idea the feeling it would give me to bring a character to life. That first character, The Blue Revenger, never really got developed, but the idea of him, of a man that mearly seconds earlier existed to no one, suddenly existed to me... once I got started, I simply couldn't stop. More characters soon followed, as I read comics that inspired me stories came as well. Soon I was drawing my own stories with an expanding set of characters and events.

There was one problem, I couldn't draw.

I couldn't draw to save my life, and would proceed to fail just about every art class I took in highschool and my first few years of college. I was a far better writer than artist and was told so quite often. While that news was discouraging, I was undettered. While getting my AA degree in English with a focus on creative writing, I still drew my comics and characters with all the artistic skill of a disinterested toddler.

It wasn't until I checked into The Academy of Art University San Francisco that my life as an actual artist began. All the while I had still kept busy creating characters and writing stories, many many characters and many stories. I had a grand dream, to make my own universe of characters in the glorious tradition of Marvel and DC comics.

Stan Lee, the creator of many classic comic book characters once said that if you wanted a job in comics, then you have to know comics. I decided to take that advice and know comics. I ended up becoming an authority of sorts on comic books and comic book history long before I developed skill as an artist. So much so that I managed to find work around the comic book industry as a journalist, an outsider with an informed opinion. It was a strange and disappointing way to get close to the men and women I idolized as a fan.

At this point in my life, I'm struggling to decide if pursuing my personal comic book dream is a fools errand. In the last few years life has made a pretty good fool out of me, but in that time my art and my writing have come to a point where I am truly proud of the work I'm doing. The first issue of the comic book series I've been working on for 25 years is nearing completion. I've learned how to publish and print my comics myself with little to no overhead. Everything to make my comic on my own terms are in place. There is only one thing I need in order to complete this undertaking.

The name of my story in full is The Nuworld Chronicles, it is a comic book universe built from top to bottom. It creates a world that is built to allow for the existence of amazing people with amazing abilities. The story spans many years with each chapter running for 12 issues. There are six major chapters equaling 72 issues that I don't need help funding. Each issue will have back up stories that further flesh out the story of Nuworld and its inhabitants. The first series, Metro PD will help define the world and how it's different from our own. From there the story will expand and examine the effect a population of powerful people would have on a world that has grown comfortable with this elevated status quo.

Ok, it looks like I'm stalling. Like I'm selling a used car or bad life insurance. This is what I'm setting up the gofundme for. A new Pen Display monitor.

I need this monitor for a few important reasons. I went back to school to expand my understanding of art in the digital age. It was that understanding that allowed me to become a one man comic book production team. Photoshop, After Effects, Design Doll, and Cinema 4D allow me to do all of this. I have all of those programs. My computer, a Fujitsu tablet is a great tool, but it just doesn't have the processing power to juggle so many sometimes beefy programs at the same time at an effecient pace.

What I'm asking you to help me fund is a Huion Pen Display for Professionals Graphics Monitor - GT-190S w/ Glove. While my tablet may struggle, my desktop can easily do what I need, if I had the right Pen Display (a monitor I can draw on directly).

I've waited a long time and hit many hurdles to get to this point. I don't have dreams of fame and fortune, but of a kid many many years from now rummaging through a pile of free comics and finding mine. The display will allow me to efficiently leave my mark on history, a peace of myself that some kid might really enjoy one day.

I only need the funds soon because having the monitor will allow me to work faster, well faster. I've been working on building a small following by displaying samples of my work on Deviant Art.

I keep the finished pages offline for storytelling purposes, but I can't wait to show you my finished work. Because my overhead is so small, I do plan to share my work for free. My Facebook page dedicated to my comic (right now it's focused on a side project but will be repurposed in time) will display a full 30 page copy of each issue, available free for one month. Buying a copy through Amazon will include the back up stories creating greater value for those willing to buy a copy to collect. I will also be selling digital copies of each issue at the lowest allowable selling point, which is about 99 cents. Again, the goal isn't to get rich, but to share.

Words can't describe how grateful I am that you even bothered to read this. I'm not going to wait around to see if I reach my goal, I'm going to keep plugging away a page at a time. Feel free to follow me on twitter @DanteRMaddox and the Deviant Art page to check my  progress. If you could help me do this, you would be helping me bring into reality 100's of diverse characters, and a bold new world that might fascinate and inspire young people like my comic book heroes inspired me.
