Geoff Goguen's Medical Fund

On Sunday, June 26 at approximately 11:30pm Geoff was in a single vehicle motorcycle accident on the off ramp of Exit 36 off of Route 3.

MedFlight air lifted Geoff to Brigham and Women's in Boston. The emergency department and surgical team quickly determined that Geoff needed to be brought to the OR and at 2:00am they began his 13 hour surgery.

Geoff's CAT Scan showed no head trauma or internal organ damage. The accident amputated Geoff's left arm at the elbow with the exception of some skin staying intact. The elbow was severely damaged, the tendons and nerve endings torn and the muscle also. The amazing upper extremities surgical team at Brigham and Women's was able to reconnect the bones with external traction, mend two of the three nerves that control movement and feeling in the hand and they were able to reconnect many of the nerve endings in his left arm. He is missing most of the skin on this arm. He lost a lot of blood because of the accident and during surgery. He has received several transfusions and is currently fighting for his life in the ICU. The next few days will determine if, for lack of a better term, his left arm is killing him. They are watching him closely to be sure the arm does not cause any complications to the rest of his body, like his kidneys. If it does, they will reassess and if necessary amputate just above the elbow. Life over limb. The next two to three weeks will determine if the arm is alive. The blood has to continue to flow to his hand and there are many things they measure to determine that. At that time they will assess if Geoff can keep his arm and if not they will amputate just above the elbow. Again, life over limb. His right arm is broken in two places of the ulna, which caused his right elbow to dislocate. They were able to set these breaks and realign his elbow with external traction. He also has a fractured left ankle.

Geoff has more surgery planned for his immedate future and an incredibly long road ahead of him. He will be in the ICU for an undetermined amount of time and once he is ready to leave there he will put placed in a room on the Ortho floor of Brigham and Women's. From there he will most likely be placed in a rehab facility where they will work on him regaining the ability to use his arms and hands. We know for certain that Geoff's left arm will never be the same again.

The funds we collect through this page will be used to help our family cover additional medical costs, like copays for doctors visits, physical therapy, medications and any costs not covered by insurance.

The outpouring of support from our family and friends has been overwhelming and a true testament to what my husband means to all of you.

It is not easy for me and I know it would not be easy for Geoff to ask for help, especially the financial kind. I know I can speak for Geoff when I say how grateful we are for any support you can give us through this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you with love,
Liz, Sam and Zac
