Liam's Medical Fund

Meet Liam.  He is a sweet 6-year old boy with a huge heart and a lot of love. Liam was in my Kindergarten class last year. He always lit up the room with his beautiful smile and happy heart. Every morning, before he would hang up his backpack to go out for recess, he would pop his head in my classroom and say "Good morning, Mrs. Parkos!". I loved hearing this every morning. He is a polite, sweet, and fun little boy who loves to build anything with his hands. He loves to learn (especially read), go to school, and play with this friends. His favorite activities to do in my classroom were building with blocks or legos, playing with puppets, or being the "Dad" in dramatic house-play.

Unfortunately, Liam was involved in a bad accident with a riding lawn mower this Summer. His leg was caught while the blades were engaged. He has undergone a couple of surgeries at the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, WI. Doctors were sure that his leg would have to be amputated up to the knee in order to give Liam the best quality of life. The decision was made, and everyone prepared for amputation. Then, a miracle happened. While Liam was in surgery for amputation, his plastic surgeon came out of the operating room and told Liam's parents that he would be able to save Liam's foot after all. The surgeon himself was floored that this was possible after previously seeing the damage. All of the positive thoughts, prayers, and love that was sent to Liam throughout the week must have truly helped.

In the end, Liam's foot will still never look the same, and it will take years to work on it. He will start out his school year with a walker in the Fall, and eventually will undergo skin graph reconstruction, but one day he will be able to run, play sports, and do all of the things his friends are able to do.

Despite this wonderfu news, Liam and his family will still need to make some major changes in order to adjust to his new life. He will have a long road ahead of him to recover through physical therapy. They will need to purchase a van, since Liam won't be able to fit in the middle seat of their small cars anymore, and also in order to fit the walker and strollers for his siblings in the trunk. They also need to make a change in their living situation. The family currently lives in a bilevel home which is not walker accessible.

Other costs include his parents' missed wages, care for their other two children, and cost of meals while they're in the hospital. There is also the cost of gas now to and from home and the hospital, but also gas costs in the future to doctor appointments, physical therapy, and psychiatrist appointments. His parents will have extra missed wages while he is in the recovery stage after he his home from the hospital.

Please consider helping out this family.
