Dear friends,
This year I decided to challenge myself and to compete in a bodybuilding contest. Although I occasionally did some exercises and yoga, I had never been involved in lifting weights. This is a hard journey that requires physical and mental discipline. As a scientist, I also spend countless hours of my time writing grants and proposals for research funding from the government and I am turn down often or I am not given enough resources. Recently, one of my proposals to work with high school students that are interested in science was refused, and it was when I decided to add value to my contest preparation and help a cause. I will be raising funds for MarineLab, a Marine Resources Development Foundation in Key Largo, FL, where students from all across the country experience STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education by learning about the ocean.
MarineLab is part of a non-profit organization created in 1971 to help improve the quality of life on earth through education and the responsible use of marine resources for food, fresh water, energy, minerals and medicine. The majority of the students who participate in programs such as Water Quality lab are in middle school and high school (This is the age where future scientists are made!) The research institution that I work for has graciously donated instruments to perform water quality measurements. The instruments, however, needs new sensors and maintenance, which can be costly. I want to help MarineLab to raise the money to cover the cost of fixing the instrument that are necessary to train teachers and students in water quality analysis of the Florida Keys.
Through the Water Quality lab, MarineLab students will perform a valuable service to the community while learning about marine ecosystems. Please help these students to experience STEM education by learning about our resources. Donating to this program will not only allow us to fix these instruments, but will excite the youth of our community in exciting, real-world science, thus inspiring future scientists and informed citizens. By donating to my cause, you are helping create awareness on how critical water quality is to the health of our oceans. Not only can you help promote STEM education, you can also help save our planet with the breakthroughs that will come about as a result of your help!
My goal is to raise $2,000 to have two pieces of equipment in perfect shape and ready to be used by the 4,000 students and teachers that MarineLab serves each year.

I will happily accept any donations. Every dollar counts and no donation is too small! My goal is to raise a thousand dollars ($1,000) per week. I will post updates of my training, fundraising results and of course of the results of the contest. Your contribution will give me an extra push to win this competition! Este año me decidí a participar en mi primer concurso de físico culturismo! Lo mío era hacer yoga y meditar, nunca había levantado pesas. Definitivamente es un gran reto que requiere mucho trabajo físico y disciplina. En mi profesión como científico, también paso muchas horas escribiendo propuestas para la financiación de proyectos de investigación, pero desafortunadamente con frecuencia son negadas debido a la gran demanda o no se otorgan suficientes recursos. Recientemente uno de mis propuestas para trabajar con estudiantes de secundaria interesados en ciencia fue rechazado, y fue cuando decidí añadir valor a mi preparación para la competencia y ayudar a una causa. Me he propuesto recaudar fondos para MarineLab, una Fundación de Desarrollo de Recursos Marinos en los Cayos de La Florida donde los estudiantes de todo el país aprenden la fascinación de la ciencia y el océano.
MarineLab es parte de una organización sin ánimo de lucro creada en 1971 para ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida en el planeta través de la educación y el uso responsable de los recursos marinos. La mayoría de los estudiantes que participan en MarineLab están en la escuela secundaria y preparatoria (La edad en la que se forman los futuros científicos!) La institución de investigación para la que trabajo ha donado gentilmente a MarineLab instrumentos para realizar mediciones de calidad del agua, pero los instrumentos necesitan nuevos sensores y de mantenimiento, lo cual es costoso. Quiero ayudar a MarineLab a recaudar el dinero para cubrir el costo de reparación de los instrumentos que son necesarios para formar a los profesores y estudiantes en el análisis de la calidad del agua de los Cayos de Florida.
Sus donación a este programa motivará a los jóvenes a involucrarse más en ciencia y prepararlos para ser futuros científicos, además de ayudar a crear conciencia sobre cómo la calidad del agua es fundamental para la salud de nuestros océanos y a salvar nuestro planeta con los avances que se producen como resultado de su ayuda!
