Fund Leon Springs Trail Foundation

Imagine, starting here in Leon Springs, a trail that connects to the city of San Antonio trails system—allowing bikers, walkers, and joggers up to 100 miles without facing a single traffic light or any interaction with motorized vehicles.

In our rapidly-developing community, Leon Springs has no public parks, a lack of sidewalks, and a major thoroughfare—Boerne Stage Road—which remains unfavorable, even dangerous, for pedestrian and cycling traffic.  But there is a proposed plan to change this situation.

The Leon Springs Trail Foundation (non-profit 501(c)3) has been formed to create a 2.7 mile trail along Leon Creek that follows the Old Spanish Trail Auto Highway, the first paved cross country road from St. Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California.  Our plan—a ten feet wide, reinforced concrete trail from the Concept Therapy Institute east to the intersection of Boerne Stage Road and Interstate 10, one that passes under bridges, avoiding traffic conflict, and, in fact, easing traffic issues.  It would eventually be turned over to the City of San Antonio for maintenance.

The benefits and possibilities of this project are exciting: preserving open space; providing a natural respite in an urban area (maybe a refreshing and healthy lunch break for neighborhood business employees); a way to celebrate our landscape, history, and culture; a pleasurable, non-polluting alternative that helps consolidate and connect our community in a meaningful way.

 Of course, unlike the San Antonio trails, the Leon Springs Trail will not be funded by city taxes.  As a non-profit organization of volunteers, we need your help and support, first, to pay for design and engineering drawings ($100,000),  by October 2016 so that we may pursue further construction (approximately $1,000,000 per mile).
