Help us with Kayla's medical costs

Donation protected
When Kayla's owner died several months ago, she was found howling next to his bed. She was 10 years old. Within 2 weeks her owner’s wife was moved to a nursing home. Their niece took Kayla and contacted every rescue she could find. She planned to euthanize Kayla because she didn’t hear back from anyone, but a friend of hers contacted PAL and we immediately took Kayla in when we found out what a good girl she is.   Our vet discovered mammary tumors (common when females have not been spayed), which we removed at the same time that we spayed her.  Unfortunately, the biopsy showed that cells were growing.   This meant we needed x-rays of her chest and an ultrasound of her abdomen to find out if the cancer had spread before deciding on our next steps.

Happily, her chest and abdomen were clear of any spots or tumors,  but we were advised that she may need chemotherapy depending on the results of follow up testing.

Kayla is now in a foster home with a couple whose beloved German Shepherd died several months before.   This lovely and very intelligent girl is cherished there and may  be happier that she has ever been.  Her foster mom Laura will adopt her as soon as the follow up tests are done, but cannot afford the expensive chemotherapy.  Kayla has a big fenced in yard, and Laura takes her on multiple walks daily around her neighborhood and in the state parks nearby as she knows this is the best way to build up the muscles in her legs and hips to keep her walking and running without pain.  It turns out Kayla is rather obsessed with sticks and she has plenty of games of fetch with her new mom every day to satisfy her stick obsession. Kayla follows Laura like a shadow.

PAL took Kayla in because this sweet, funny dog did not deserve to lose her life because her owner passed away.  We knew we could find her a great home, and she now has a life that many dogs only dream of.  What we didn't anticipate was the extremely high cost of the medical care she needed (we also removed a tumor from her foot unrelated to the mammary tumors - happily biopsy results showed no danger).   We are asking for help in covering these costs as it was not in our budget,.

The Pet Adoption League of Hackettstown, NJ has rescued many older dogs without hesitation that other rescues won't take because they fear their age may make them difficult to place.    We don't hesitate because we have found older dogs homes over and over again without any problem because they have so much love to give and many years to give it.  We proceeded with the medical care Kayla needed because this is also something that sets our rescue apart.  To us it's critical that the animals we adopt are healthy and that adoptors are fully aware of any medical issues that may cause problems later.  For Kayla and others we don't hesitate with a decision to proceed with whatever care they need because many kind people have stepped up before to help cover the costs for a dog or cat who needed vet care that was beyond our reach.

We hope you can help with a donation of any amount to help us get our budget back on track for the many animals in our care and for those coming in every week.
Thank you very much for your generosity.
