Dan & Lisa Hackel’s Medical Adventure

We first want to thank anyone interested enough to read about our concerns.

In 1993 Dan and Lisa found out the reason Dan had trouble breathing. It was due to a genetic disease called Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency (A1AD). The consequences of this disease led to an imbalance of enzymes and proteins produced in the liver, which damages the lung cells.

For over 20 years Dan has had weekly infusions of an enzyme replacement therapy, administered by a nurse. The infusion is designed to slow the deterioration of his lungs. Along with that, he takes many different daily medications, goes to pulmonary therapy and exercises at home. On July 30th, 2014, Dan’s lungs lost their ability to function properly. He was then listed for a lung transplant at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Hospital.

After waiting almost 2 years, his doctor told him that his wait for a lung could stretch on far too long in NY, due to organ donor shortages. So, she suggested he try another hospital that had a larger donor pool, which would shorten his wait time.

The doctor first suggested Duke University Hospital, NC. After extensive evaluation at Duke, Dan was rejected for their program due to A1AD with possible liver complications. His next and last option for a timely transplant now falls to St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Phoenix, AZ. This adventure is in July, 2016 and  is over 2500 miles from home. This presents many logistical issues that they know with the Lord’s help, they will be just fine.

We would like to help make things a little easier for them. With your help we can make this adventure happen.
