Devon is a  13 year old teenager with multiple physical and intellectual  disabilities who recently underwent intensive corrective  spinal surgery for scoliosis condition. Devon underwent two operations within 24 hours and had an adverse reaction to the first surgery resulting in loss of sensation and use of his legs, which is absolutely devastasting for Devon and for his family.Devon has two brothers Jaimon and Flynn  and a loving mum and dad Megan and Justin. Devon has now been in the RCH Melbourne for 5 weeks and he will remain in the hospital for many months yet to recieve the treatment and rehabilitation he requires to get him ready for discharge.

Megan,Devons devoted mum has been in the hospital by his side from the start. the financial costs are beginning to  mount up...and thats not the start of it...to bring Devon home to an environment which will be adequate for his care requirements the family home will need modifying and renovating to allow for a wheelchair, hoists and a new bathroom to tend to  his personal care requirements. He will also need a new bed .These are just the few things that Devon will need on his discharge from hospital.
The family has yet to recieve any form of compensation or funding for these imminent requirements for Devons future care.  My name is Sandy and as a friend of Megan and Justin and their beautiful children i am imploring people to donate to Devon and his family so the financial burden and stress they are facing now and into the future will be eased as they come to terms with the loss of Devons physical independance and dreams of further mobility.

Update from Devon & the Brown family - Hello from freezing Belgrave South! Devon was discharged 3 weeks ago & we've been busy settling into a routine & enjoying being home in our beautiful environment. He's coping so much better at home surrounded by his family. So too are his beautiful brothers.
We are slowly setting up his rehab appointments for twice a week & he has been doing so well, constantly persisting until he's tired or it hurts. The temporary mods to shower him in our ensuite are working well until we can get started on the family bathroom modifications thank god. Still waiting on SWEP funding to be approved & then the green light to start the job. I'm still not working & won't be until at least February/March next year when Devon will hopefully go back to school full time. He gets very tired easily & also needs to lie down in his bed during the day to rest his back after sitting for a while. He's doing fantastic with his manual transfers to chair/bed/car but it's exhausting for all of us too. In a way it's good it's too cold &/or wet to get out for walks or go outside because Our next plan of attack is to excavate half our backyard to allow Devon access. He loves nothing better than to feel the wind in his face, watch the trees move & rustle. He can no longer enjoy his swing or trampoline so the least we can do is provide him access to his own backyard.
I know I mentioned Dev's tiredness, but Justin & I are pretty exhausted as well. Not just the emotional & physical drain & trauma of the last few months but from Dev's waking during the night & the occasional nightmares, It's like having a toddler again. On wheels. Despite all this we are reminded constantly of how blessed we are to still have him with us! We never know what we are capable of until faced with no other choice. It's Devon's smiles & regular hugs that make it all so worthwhile. Thank you all so much for your love & support. Without this amazing bubble you have all created we would be so lost.
Stay safe
Love Megan, Justin, Jaimon, Devon & Flynn xx

Rant warning! As much as I like to try & stay positive & I truely do feel so blessed that Dev is still with us, I'm struggling. I feel displaced from my own home & family & friends. I'm so tired from lack of sleep & stress. I'm also very damn angry that Devon continues to contract infections, one after the other. He was due to come off his IV drip for the MRSA infection in his bladder & kidneys tomorrow but it now looks like he has another infection from his previous cannula site in his left leg. I'm struggling with the one step forward three back. I miss my other boys & husband so much it hurts. Just when Dev starts making fabulous progress in Physio with transferring without a hoist, starting simple routines like showering & wearing day clothes versus pajamas, sitting in his wheelchair to feed himself, he gets sick again & we have to start all over again! I started this week so positive & looking forward to planning his day outings before his home visits begin in what was to be about 6 weeks time, gradually working towards weekend leave. Now this is going to be moved back & revised AGAIN. I don't know whether to scream shout or cry. Yes this is about Devon & he is coping as best he can now that his anxiety is being medicated, but the ripple effects are so huge & painful. Thank you for listening. Thank you for your support & love. Moo xx

Hello from RCH Kelpie ward. Devon is adjusting to his therapy schedule here & trying to do his best. He had a wonderful visit this week from his physiotherapist Jane from his school & classroom teacher Paula. They are both working with the therapy team involved in Devon's rehab & is an absolute god send! The picture below is Devon receiving a special social story book from his friends at school. They all agree that he is funny & fun to be around & are missing him too.
Still a long road ahead but the help and assistance to help get him back home & participating in his regular life is so heartwarming & humbling.
Thank you all so much for your generosity & support financially, spiritually & emotionally . We'll keep you posted on Devon's recovery & progress. Blessings to you all, the very grateful Brown family xx
Special messages for me from my friends at school

Today Devon has been moved down to the rehab ward on level 1 Kelpie. His rehab therapies will be more intensive & routined - look out because he's going to love the hydrotherapy pool! Our expected stay is still "months" & the progress is still day by day & wait & see. So far there hasn't been any more movement or sensation in the right leg & still nothing in the left leg. His bladder & bowels are still not voiding naturally (retention due to nerve damage) & other options rather than the catheter will be looked at later this week as infection has been an on going issue. Our goal for the "short" term is to get Devon home ASAP for home visits to help keep his wellbeing & emotional spirits up. He misses his home & his family being together.
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for helping us make this happen & I will keep you all as updated as possible. Love & blessings from Megan, Justin, Jai, Devon & Flynn xx

Thank you all so much! The love & support we are receiving from so many of you is so humbling & we cannot begin to thank you all enough. Our goal is to get Devon home as soon as possible for his emotional wellbeing, even if it's just for daily then weekend visits. It's tough on a daily basis as Devon is not coping with the hospital regime of constant poking & prodding.& the changing of faces. Being non verbal too he needs one of us who knows & understands him to be with him for most of the day & night. This has been also incredibly tough on our family as a whole too. Today we managed to get Devon down to the RCH restaurant Smith & Singleton to help celebrate his brother Flynn's 10th birthday with a beautiful array of family members. I'll post some pictures on my page for you all & keep you as updated as I can from there. Big big hugs & love from Moo & the Brown Boys (Justin, Jaimon, Devon & Flynn) xx
