My name is Farhiya Jama (also known as Riya Jama) and I am a diasporic visual artist of Somali ethnicity and lives in Toronto, Canada weaponize my vulnerabilities to create fantastical worlds.
Today is my birthday and after much reflection of who my art matters to, I decided I am worthy and important to tap into my community who has never let me down in supporting my artistic vision. It took a lot of talking to my loved ones to remind me why I deserve this help.
I dream of a webseries where my narratives is seen. Imagine an Awkward Black Girl but a Somali girl as the lead instead and sharing our different Black diaspora struggles and so much more ideas related to creating content that reflects those of us who get shut out because of colourism/shadeism.
With this, I plan on not only creating more material for my Youtube channel, but including in my new content the tales of others Black girls who are struggling as a freelance artist. Supporting me looks like supporting the community. I give so much with my art, its about time I start asking for the help to continue and take my art to another level.
