Cathy and Donald Carr are childhood sweethearts from Lufkin, Texas. They are both retired teachers (Donald also a coach) who touched countless students' lives over 30+ years in the classroom and football field (Cathy in Lufkin, Donald in Corrigan).
8 years ago (2008) Donald suffered a massive stroke as well as other life threatening ailments that caused him to be completely disabled. He, with Cathy by his side, spent a year in Houston hospitals and rehabs trying to gain some idependence back. Unfortunately, he kept having setbacks and was never able to gain any independence. Cathy has cared for all of his needs, personal and medical, day in a day out. They have received no financial help for day-to-day care from health insurance, social security, or Medicare. They are not old enough to receive Medicare benefits, and being teachers, they do not qualify for social security benefits (teachers pay to teacher retirement, not social security). There has been no help out there for them, they are a case that slipped through the cracks.
Recently, Cathy was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, stage 4, in her breast, bone, and liver. She is beginning her battle with cancer and is leaning on her faith, family and friends to beat it.
Because of the pain in her body from the bone tumors, she cannot walk well and can no longer care for Donald. The family now needs funds to pay for 8-5 in home nursing care for Donald, while their kids, Jason and Ashley are at work. Donald's needs are complicated, he has various medical needs to be met, a feeding tube, ostomy bag, catheter, and complicated medicine schedule. He needs an experienced medical aide, not just a sitter to care for him. That is why the family needs financial help. To lighten the financial burden of in home care for Donald so that Cathy can focus on her battle with cancer.
The family needs funds immediately. $117 pays for 1 day of care, $585 for 1 week.
So many are asking how to help and this would meet the family's biggest need. They also request prayers for Cathy and Donald during this difficult time. It means so much to Cathy to have all of the love and support from so many in her hometown and beyond.
