Talie's Immigration & College fees

Donation protected
My name is Talie.

I'm a 33 yo Australian who has been living abroad for the last 4 years in Canada. In 2013 I met my current partners and made the firm decision to stay in Canada, a decision that over time has proven more and more difficult due to changing immigration laws and life circumstances. Just prior to the close of my work visa the immigration process changed and my job as a Restaurant Shift Supervisor/Manager was temporarily removed from the accepted job skill set to immigrate. It was re-added again later but by then my visa had expired. I had to move back to Australia.

I have no education, my work experience falls just short of current immigration standards and I'm now too old to apply for a work permit without a technical skill set Canada needs. To that end, I sat an aptitude test during my vacation here in Toronto to apply for the Welding Program at The Institute of Technical Trades. This will enable me to both return home to Toronto and gain the skills required to immigrate. Not to mention a worthwhile career to help secure my future here as there is a Canada-wide trade shortage and no end to job prospects for the forseeable future.

Why a GoFundMe? As an international student, Loans, Scholarships and Grants are unavailable to me as I'm not a Resident of Canada. Furthermore the Course fees are somewhat higher and a deposit is required to begin applying for a visa.

Where are your Savings? Prior to this, in a desperate bid to remain on the continent I had applied for a Green Card in the USA. This process has cost my family and I near $20,000USD and has drained both my savings and that of my families dry. Sadly, 5 days prior to my visa interview life circumstances changed and that option is no longer available. The funds are non-refundable.

Why $24k?
Here is a breakdown of the fees:
The Trade Program is $18k inc a $3.6k deposit
The visa fees are approx $600
 - Visa $255
 -  Medical $200
 - Police Check and Traffic offences $100
Airfare is generally $1.8k
Shipping furnature and goods $2k
And $2k as a safetynet for misc. fees I'm unaware off. (travel insurence, baggage fees, etc)

What I'm doing in leu of this fundraiser? Today I fly back to Melbourne, I'm working in a ski resort until mid september (resort work is a great way to earn a lot of money in a short period of time!) to work hard and raise as much of the funds myself as I can. The anticipated start date of my course is late October depending on class size and interest, it is my goal to to return to Toronto in the begining of October to prepare for college and settle back in to my life here.

I have been separated from my loved ones for 12months to the day as of today. I have seen them twice in that time and neither vacation has been long enough. I just want to come home, where I belong, where I am loved.  Being here with my loved ones means more to me than anything else I could ever hope or dream of.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
