SOCOBA Youth Center Plot Fencing

I am Sego Seferian from the village of Ramotswa in Southern Botswana. I lived and worked in the village of Mabule, and met my future husband there, Nicholas, while he was serving as a Peace Corp Volunteer in the village. Currently, we reside in Washington DC and Mabule is considered our second home. I have made it my mission in life to help the children in need help themselves, and we are beginning, after a long haul, to play a major role in ameliorating the tragic affects AIDS has had on our communities’ youth.

The children and youth of Mabule who have been made orphaned and vulnerable by AIDS are in great need. Since the AIDS crisis in Africa began, Mabule and the small villages surrounding it have been devastated with a multitude of deaths of their people. In spite of several gains in providing reliable testing and free antiretroviral medications to people infected with the AIDS virus from the Botswana government, the need to care for orphaned and vulnerable children and youth in the wake of this epidemic continues to grow. In response to this, I have started a non-profit corporation, the Society for Children Orphaned by AIDS (SOCOBA), to combat this tragic, on-going issue.

Presently, we are gaining momentum as the building and construction phase is approaching. We have made tremendous progress with the Botswana Land Board and they have granted us land in Mabule which will serve as the site for the SOCOBA youth mobilization center. However, we are facing yet another urgent obstacle which we need your help in overcoming. The Land Board requires that permanent fencing be installed to officially demarcate the footprint. There is a sense of urgency for this step in that the land board has hinted that they may reclaim the land if fencing is not installed, thinking that the land will become dormant and consequently may be considered for redistribution. We have spent years trying to obtain this land and it now belongs to SOCOBA children and youth. Losing this land would be a huge setback and major blow to our efforts towards building the youth mobilization center.

We are currently seeking $10,000 US dollars for the purchase of materials and installation of the permanent fencing. Please be a part of this very exciting and crucial stage we are entering. The community members are contributing by clearing the plot of bush and other desert foliage, and providing assistance to the installer as needed. Once the funds have been raised and the fencing has been installed, SOCOBA will be in a position to begin a fundraising campaign to launch the building and construction phase of the youth mobilization center.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this important funding stage for SOCOBA’s youth mobilization center
for AIDS orphans and vulnerable children and youth. We promise to make regular updates on the progress of the programs that are currently underway and keep people informed on the progress of the fencing. Please share our link with your friends, family, and personal network.  #GoBeyondGiving
