Foundation History
The Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. was formed in October 1988, by the Fifth District Order of AHEPA to raise funds from its members and the general public for cancer research grants. Shortly thereafter, the Fifth District Daughters of Penelope came on board uniting the AHEPA Family behind a common cause of philanthropic support for cancer research. It is the only Hellenic Foundation that specifically raises funds for medical cancer research doctors.
The Foundation volunteers began their fundraising efforts in March of 1989. Armed with collection canisters thus inaugurated the humble beginnings of collecting donations to provide funding for cancer research. For the past 27 years this has been one of our longest running fundraisers. Canisters can be found throughout the states of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvannia at local diners and restaurants.
Through the efforts of the “all volunteer” Board of Trustees, the Foundation presented its first grant award in the Fall of 1990 to Fox Chase Cancer Center, located in Philadelphia in the amount of $5,000.
Through the generosity and support of individuals and members of our organization as well as the expansion of several new fundraising events, the Foundation has significantly increased its financial support one hundred fold. As of 2015 the Foundation has been honored and privileged to award approximately $945,000 to the men and women who diligently work towards a cure for cancer.
Who would have thought that 27 years ago, our journey would bring us to the point, of reaching a $1,000,000 in cancer research grant awards. We hope that you will continue on this journey with us as we MARCH TO A $MILLION on November 5, 2016 and contribute here online to our Virtual Canister Collection Program. All funds collected will go towards cancer research grant awards.
Cancer does not discriminate, it affects all of us, and raising funds one coin at a time has assisted many of our research doctors on their quest of finding a cure for cancer. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Grant Recipients
Our main area of concentration is in the Tri-State area of NY, NJ and Philadelphia. Some of our most recent grantees conduct research from these institutions: Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ and Weill Cornell Medical College - Children’s Blood Foundation-Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York.
Many of them are internationally recognized cancer research medical professionals and recipients of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award, (under 40) and are highly respected by their peers. The Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. is tax-exempt under Sec. 501 ( c ) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions are deductible under the 170 (a) (2). NJ Charitable Registration No. CH-04130.
No one receives a salary or any compensation and administrative costs are kept to a minimum of 2%.
