Help Marty Beat Pancreatic Cancer

Last Saturday afternoon I went to see Marty at his place. He was sitting/sleeping in the chair by his bed. Debbie Shapiro was there and was getting ready to leave. I was glad to take over "the watch."

Marty was glad to see me and wanted me to help him get into his bed, but first, he wanted to talk to me. So I got the stool from his front room and brought it into the bedroom so we could talk.

He didn't have much energy and he spoke in a whisper, but we were able to communicate alright.

Then he wanted take a nap in his chair with his head on the bed. I checked in with him after 20 minutes and he wanted to continue his snooze, so I let him do that. When I checked again about 20 minutes later, he still wasn't ready to abdicate the chair for the bed and told me to check in at 3:30 when it was time for him to take his meds. I checked in then and he still wanted to stay where he was as he was able to get some sleep. I told him I'd be going, then.

He said that someone was coming over in a bit. Then he told me to "put the stool back," which I did. : )

Last Saturday night, Marty needed to be taken to the hospital. He was admitted to the Critical Care Unit at Glendale Memorial. He was in good spirits but his body did not have the energy to move about without assistance, and he was not able to get nutrition, which only added to the problem.

Earlier this morning, I received the news that Marty peacefully departed. My wife Cyndie and I went to the hospital where we were joined by Sheila Zimmermann, Marty's son, Sable and his wife Laurie, Marty's brother, Ed, and his wife Linda.

We all talked about Marty, some of the highlights of his magical life, the music he made, the students he taught, the lives he touched.

Of immediate interest is the planning of Marty's Life Celebration, which is being coordinated at this time. When a date, time and place have been finalized, it will be posted on facebook and via e-mail. The idea is that after that celebration, those who choose to may come over to my recording studio, Theta Sound in Burbank, and we will have the Marty Party 2 with music jam for those so inclined. Our place was the site of the now infamous Marty Party 1 which celebrated Marty's 50th birthday. We strung lights across our courtyard for the occasion which have remained up and operating for nearly 15 years! Go Marty!

At this point in time, the GoFundMe campaign is ending. All remaining donations will be used to cover Marty's living expenses.

Marty and I are so appreciative of each of you who donated whatever you could to help: money, time, love, prayers. We all wanted the ending to be different, but I know that Marty is no longer suffering from the unbearable pain that manifested in his body once the disease set up shop in his pancreas.

Marty is a brave being, and I know we'll see him/her soon in another form. He leaves in his wake a wonderful extended family; lots of brilliant writings on the art, craft and business of music; cool music recordings; and the memories of the live music he made that so many of us were able to experience, groove to and enjoy.

Just as importantly, Marty leaves us with cutting-edge information gleaned from his journey; information that may help others to detect and reverse cancer long before it reaches the critical stages. People benefiting from this will certainly be part of Marty's legacy.

Though Marty is no longer in that body, he is very much with us in spirit. If you happen to get a mental picture or impression of Marty while you are creating art, living life, driving around or falling asleep, be sure to acknowledge his presence. I'm sure he'd appreciate it...

Thank you for being part of this journey.
