Yasmin's College Education

I am a very proud mother of my eldest daughter. Yasmin graduated from Colaiste Nano Nagle earlier this year and she has passed her high school final examinations (Leaving Certificates) with flying colours which placed her at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, Mayo campus, far away from home. Due to financial constraint, we have decided that she is going to do her foundation course in Limerick College for Further Education which is near to home. Yasmin is going to do Business Administration with French.

Yasmin is a cheerful, bright student when she was in school. She befriends with everyone in her own or other classes. Her teachers adore her personality. Although she was not a keen sporting person, she was actively involved in other school extracurricular activities. She was one of the school debaters, represented Colaiste Nano Nagle in a number of secondary school debate competitions. Yasmin was a top student in French subject as well as she loves the language to her heart content. But her dreams to embark on a college journey may be jeopardised.

Being immigrants, it is not cheap to send her away to college. As non-EU citizens, we have to spend more than €3500 to start off her degree programme and that does not include living costs and study materials. We have seek for financial assistance from the education governing bodies but was rejected because we are not eligible for such allowances. Luckily one charity body is willing to contribute €150 towards the tuition fee and we are grateful enough.

After discussing with the college admission officer, we managed to set up a payment plan for Yasmin’s tuition fee which can be made in 3 instalments. After making the first instalment, we are left with a shortfall of approximately €2800 which has to be paid in full before end of this year. I am taking this manoeuvre after considering all options that I will not be able to come up with that amount of money as Yasmin has a younger brother and sister whose school fees and supplies need to be met as well.
