Helping Hearts for Carl Finamore

Donation protected
On April 30, 2016 our friend and comrade, Carl Finamore was rushed to San Francisco General where he endured a nine-hour emergency surgery to relieve the leakage of blood in his brain. Carl had a 'dural arteriovenous fistula', a very rare brain hemorrhage. Following the surgery, Carl remained asleep for several days, with his partner Tonia, nephew Matthew, and sister Pamela at his bedside. After regaining consciousness, doctors assessed Carl's condition and determined that his recovery would be of a longer duration and require acute therapies.  Carl spent several weeks at Tunnell Rehab Center after he was let out of Intensive Care.

Carl was sent home from Tunnell Center and has been making slow, but steady progress.  With regular physical therapy, Carl has overcome the paralysis on his right side and can now walk, with the use of a cane.  He has been receiving speech therapy and has made some modest progress.  Carl can follow discussions, and can utter a few words or a phrase or two.  He is not yet back to his old speechifying rebel-rousing self.  But, with continued therapy, we are all optimistic.

Over the past 50+ years Carl has been a fixture in building support of labor struggles as well as causes for social justice.  There has not been a march, picket line, a demonstration, sit-in, or action for social justice to which Carl has not lent his energies and presence.

Carl has written countless articles to garner support and educate us about events local, national and international in scope.  Many recall his enlightening articles on the Arab Spring, Black Lives Matter, as well as labor struggles of hospital, airline and education workers, just to name a few.

Friends and family have stepped in to help Tonia and Carl, but the demands of Carl's recovery are great and costly.  He needs continued therapies and the availability of these therapies is now in question, due to medical policies, not to mention the uncertainty of the whole health care situation for those with disabilities.

Carl needs equipment (wheel chair, cane, walker, shower hand rails, etc)  personal hygiene products, and medications.  The one-on-one speech and physical therapies need to be continued.

Carl and Tonia have been billed thousands of dollars of nursing home and hospital costs that his medical insurance will not pay. Those bills remain unpaid, as Carl's financial means are insufficient. Carl and Tonia have also paid for numerous and essential medical supplies and equipment that he needs at home to ensure his safety and help his mobility. His medical insurance has not paid for these necessary supplies and equipment, nor have they reimbursed Carl for his costs in purchasing them.

While Carl continues to grow stronger, two incidences of gran mal seizures have drained their resources, both physical and financial.

Carl and Tonia have a long road ahead, but Finamore has never been one to shy away from a challenge.  The care and therapies required to bring Carl back to his normal energetic and unstoppable self are lengthy and expensive.

The expenses since his brain bleed have devastated their retirement savings, and they are tapped out.

Our collective contributions will be a way to insure that needed therapies are continued, and will let Carl know we’ve got his back and are rooting for his recovery.  It will be an acknowledgement of the life of service Carl has led so far, and allow him to get back to work in the struggle to make a better world.

Please give what you can to help Carl on his road to recovery.  The fight for justice continues.
